University of Visvesvaraya College of Engineering M.Tech Review By Sameer Ahmad

Before coming to Bangalore, I never knew about UVCE and that this is one of the oldest colleges of the country. Other than academics, the college has taught me how to deal with people because when you stay at home, you don’t learn how to fend. So, coming out of home is in itself a huge learning. Why students in North are in a horrific state while pursuing and completion of engineering is what I learned here. Engineers in Bangalore are not worried about jobs but about learning the skills. Unlike in Delhi NCR where students are chasing jobs and here students don’t even care. People just keep crumbling in NCR while in Bangalore; people know how to make best use of the resources. So, I guess I have thrown some light upon the capital regions and Bangalore and the difference of mindset what students have there and what they have here. UVCE is all the reasons for country started believing in and making things easier for all. UVCE has always seen engineers as person who will change things around rather than be in their cubicles and do coding for the rest of their lives.

In M.E. batch of UVCE, there weren’t many good coders or students who were exceptional but at UVCE, we all became experts. UVCE is in a way boring as there’s not much beyond academics because M.E. itself is too vast to get time for other things. Strictness in attendance is something which students of my region can’t bear and that is why the ratio of students from NCR is less in Bangalore. The calendar was always water tight because practicals, classes, industrial tours, and seminars meant that by the team we come back to the hostel, we are left with the last drop of the fuel.

Don’t just keep things to you, even if you have a slightest of doubt, you can go and ask them as they will always be ready to help you out. It’s not that you can’t see them beyond classes as there are no boundaries between students and the teachers. You can ask them over phone at any point in time or can ask them to stay up after the classes and two pieces of chairs is all what they will ask for because they won’t leave your hand until you are done. Many thought they are biased towards some but the reality was that those who went to them for help; they helped those students and those who though they will do it on their own, finally suffered.

This was the whole fight as because I missed the bus of placements in UG at Northcap University, I had come here. You must have seen Indian tech companies at many campuses but this was the first time I saw people from Microsoft, SAP, Adobe, and IBM have come for taking the interviews. I was so nervous and didn’t even go for the interview the first day as I knew I won’t be able to stand them. When in crisis, turn to placement cell as they organized virtual interviews and made us confident to stand in front of the interviewers. Placements were amazing as none of the students who were placed through campus had an offer of less than 50k a month.

My parents laid this condition that they will send me Bangalore only if I stay at the hostel. For the first time in my life, I saw that the hostel was not inside the campus. Secondly the hostel was so old that it looked like a haunted building. I used to video call my parents daily and show them the condition. In the middle of the second semester, they agreed with me to leave the hostel and stay in a PG close to the college. The college is 100 years old and still looks fresh and the hostel which was just 20 years old look like was built in a primitive era.

The UVCE building that you see today is built while we were studying. Some facilities are added from the existing facilities like the main admin building which had lesser classrooms; the new one has double the classrooms. During our time the classrooms had fans and they have now been taken over by ACs. The old palace has a statue of its founder at the entrance of the main building and the two dead trees looked like they are protecting the main building. The infrastructure seriously was quite poor but since a new admin building should have been ready by now a lot of problems that we faced would have been solved. Labs and library though were amazing then, so no complaints with them.

The campus life doesn’t had anything knew apart from the power packed two days fest called MILARO. It was more of a challenge between the local students and the outsiders because we hardly understood Kannada dance and they found it tough to understand dance on Punjabi songs.
