National Institute of Fashion Technology B.Des Review By Chaithanya Nambiar

NIFT has a brand identity in the industry and it is considered as the best Fashion Institution in India, under the Ministry of textiles. This ‘tag’ definitely helps NIFTians to be prioritized by the fashion industry/companies. The course I opted, i.e., B.Des Fashion Communication, covers a wide range of programs, consisting of various promotional aspects related to Fashion and Design. It is a good environment to learn and explore the different fields and gain industry exposure and expertise in the field you are passionate about.

The course consists of 15 different streams like, Fashion Journalism, Photography, Videography, Research, Styling, Graphic Design, UI/UX, etc. Entry requirements; Should have passed 10+2, Age limit - Under 24 years old. There is an entrance exam conducted, in 2 parts. Part 1; General Aptitude and Part 2; Creative Aptitude, followed by a situation test and then counseling, where the students are allocated to different campuses and courses according to their performance in the entrance and the ranks secured by them.

The faculty members are industry experts from various streams and academic backgrounds, which are related to the course that they are part of. Their experience in the industry is taken into consideration and they go through entrance exams of their own and interviews to acquire a teaching position in the institution. They teach subjects related to their industry and educational backgrounds and their style of teaching is a blend of theoretical classes and practical projects and juries.

There is no placement cell / committee at the institution. Companies are contacted by the organisation during placements or companies request the institute to conduct interviews in their campuses to recruit students from the institution.

There is no hostel provided for the boys. The girl’s hostel is nice, and food is provided three times a day, along with timely snacks. The hostel has a gym and small areas for recreation.

The campus is not huge, although the building has 8 floors and is moderate. The structure is big enough to accommodate the students and faculties and there are only limited seats provided in the institution. There are all the amenities required for the students belonging to various design courses within the institution. The classrooms are spacious with windows. There are labs and other facilities as well in the institute.

There are different fests and activities conducted by the institute. For example, spectrum, converge, etc. which are cultural / sports events or meets that takes place in different campuses across India in an academic year. This provides opportunities for the students to showcase their skills and earn valuable certificates in honor of their participation. There are clubs present, although only some are active. There is a student fest organised specifically in NIFT Kannur, called Yugam. The students are super friendly and it’s a crazy crowd to be around. The institute provides exposure to different cultures and people with different dynamics and it is a stand-out crowd altogether.
