The Neotia University BBA Review By Subhechchha Ghatak

For commerce students, there are very limited options as parents always wish that their children should do CA. My elder brother was doing BBA and he asked me to do BBA. I didn’t have a choice of my own and decided to take up BBA. I chose TNU as it was 30 kms from my place and that way I got to explore the city for the first time where I stayed for 18 years. TNU is effectively in the outskirts of the Kolkata city but the university has been built with various facilities. Like every university has their pros and cons, TNU too had some. Admissions were based on HSC marks as the cut off for BBA was 86%. It is lesser than NHSM or St. Xavier’s as the university is quite new. The intake still was less as they haven’t just filled the classes with any number of students like other private colleges or university does.

Most students were Bengali but still the students were restricted from using Bengali as a language of communication in the class. This is a new concept as you can go to any top colleges of Kolkata and you will see students and professors interacting in Bengali. Many industries experts visited the TNU campus and gave us informative lectures. BBA (Hons) is not that vast a course so we were free to take time out and prepare for Civil services, Bank exams, or MBA entrance. The university has provided us with resources for all and also the university helped us in all possible ways to prepare for all that we wanted.

The faculty was nothing short of being called outstanding. Their communication language rule was superb as that built confidence in me at least because even after studying in convent all throughout, but was not sure of speaking in English with my friends or teachers. So, that fear of missing out was gone forever with the help of our faculty at TNU Kolkata. They taught well as BBA is just the beginning of management studies and they made sure if we move for further studies, we would not look like an amateur. The faculty was always readily available for assistance and I got more than I wished for from them.

For BBA the placements were yet to start. We were taken on a small industrial tour to Liluah where we visited many industries. We got great learning at the campus but unfortunately no jobs whatsoever. We were told from the start that we will have to find job off campus as the university is yet to receive bids for commerce stream. Engineering department of the university was placed well because that is the most sought after department of the university. Rest all departments are yet to find their feet but the management is on it and hopefully the placement scenario too will change soon.

The campus is huge and in that there are three boys and a lone girl’s hostel. The girls' hostel building was the humongous of them all. The hostels are good enough as many of my friends were hostelers and were quite happy with the security feature of the hostels. The curfew time was strict but since the university is far off from the city and plus the crime rate in the city is ever increasing, the girls had to be back at the hostel by 7 pm. Boys had fun because their in-time was 9 pm and they were rule breakers too. Well, since we don’t stay in Scandinavian nations, we are used to such partiality but nevertheless the campus is enough to take care of all our entertainment and food demands. With special permissions, non-hostellers are allowed to stay at the hostels. I was lucky that I made good friends and enjoy the hostel life on few occasions.

The college is on the highway as the road next to our college was a highway that leads to Kolkata. The university is quite big and there are several buildings inside the campus. The campus itself was a landscape because it was previously cattle rearing farm which was later converted into a university. Since, sports quota got me here, I was concerned about the sporting facilities of the university. They didn’t disappoint me a single bit because the ground was not leveled but good enough to practice all the sport that one wanted. I was a into age group cricket but girls were not interested and therefore I had to play alongside the boys. Never mind though as I got few out of the university and for that I was applauded by the entire university.

Camps Life was not so fun because daily two to two and a half hours were spent on travelling. The university has arranged transport facilities so used to travel in the university bus. 7am at bus stop and evening 7 pm back home. The university do organize events but aren’t of that magnitude which entice a media house to cover the footage. I also, therefore avoided being part of any of the university events.
