MES Abasaheb Garware College BCA Review By Himanshu Yadav

Well from my experience all I can say is that if you can stand strict lectures do assignments timely and even attend the lectures which you don’t even understand than trust me there’s no better college than Abasaheb Garware College. We have a lot of good colleges around like the Modern College, BMCC, MMC, Symbiosis, and Fergusson College and we see students of those colleges having fun at E-Square, Dominos, CCD, and other happening areas of the city but we have no choice but to attend lectures. The faculties and the non-teaching staff are great but will never compromise on strictness. So, if you can be strict with yourself because in University of Pune, changing college in graduation is nearly impossible. Once you are in a college means you have to stuck with at all costs. The cut-off of Garware is not that high as outsiders can easily get admissions in BCA here with 75% or more in HSC exams. Well, the students here maybe average academically but one can’t escape the pressure that is put on at Garware College.

Well, if the academic sky here had a lot of shade of blue. Lectures as compulsory as anything, classes mostly on time. Students had to adjust because the college will never adjust in academics as they are quite serious about it. BCA was the most serious course here as B.Sc students still had some leeway but BCA students had nothing to do apart from studies. Earlier we were told that we will have labs just twice in a week but on some weeks, we had lab sessions almost daily. Well doing BCA from here was one of the toughest things because assignments would never end and I had to keep my laptop on for practice even after coming back home.

Well, BCA may not be one of the most sought-after courses but the faculties that the college brought were indeed the most sought-after ones. M. Tech, MCA and all the specialized degree holders were the faculties who made learning quite simple. BCA is as good as any IT specialized degree and the value of it is quite high. The course was under rated but the faculties were not. The faculties have achieved the heist with their teaching techniques. I was in awe of them right from the start and it remained throughout.

Well, since it was a specialized course, some special companies like Wipro, TCS, and Infosys have come for placements. Well, they came but jobs were just not meant to be as only few students who had special acumen were offered jobs. So, no placements whatsoever for students who weren’t special. It wasn’t entirely students or the faculty’s fault. The problem was that our course didn’t cover all the aspects required for which a company could hire us. The work space today needs specialized people. We probably weren’t that special and hence the placements of that scale could never happen.

One small boys and girls hostel was inside the campus. The hostel was pretty average as it had many facilities but the rooms were below par. One of the main reasons is that the hostel is indeed quite old and the renovation of the entire building is rather mandatory now. With very little fees that they command the college might be short of funds. From hot water, to furnished rooms, the facilities hardly lacked. To make sure that students coming from outside don’t feel saddened by the fact that they have nothing to cheer for, the hostels are laced with a recreation room. The room had TV and quite a few gaming facilities and was remained open throughout.

There are four buildings in all including one new building where BCA classes took place. Luckily, our building was the best building of the campus as all the labs and our auxiliary library were one of the best in the campus. However, the best part of the college was its location as Pune’s one of the biggest bus stations Decccan Bus Stop was at a walkable distance from the college. The college has a nice garden which was used for experimentation of Botany students. The college’s playground is to awe for because it is right next to the dome building of the campus and therefore one side of it always had shade.

Since, the college is strict, one can doubt the events but it wasn’t meant to be. Science students too are fun loving and we got ample breaks from our computers to enjoy the sports week at the campus. If the sports week wasn’t enough the annual cultural fest too was organized. The crowd wasn’t as good as the colleges that I have mentioned at the start but getting an opportunity was important. So, the college is strict with academics but has taken care of extra-curricular activities too.
