Sophia College for Women BJMC Review By Neha Pandey

If I compare the college with its counterparts like Jai Hind College, KC, or Xavier’s, Sophia College Mumbai is as good as them and the only problem is that its all-girls college. Other than that, everything remains the same. For BMM, they have introduced an entrance and therefore it enhanced the quality of students that were admitted in the college. An entrance creates a huge difference in the intake of quality of students and thereby it helps the college to garner same prestige as the above-mentioned colleges. Many notable alumni have been a part of this college and this is now an 8-decade old college, and that makes its alumni base one of the strongest. Even after doing so well, the college is an unknown commodity even in Mumbai. No big firms accept students of this college and this is one of the drawbacks otherwise the college has done brilliantly academically.

The college is affiliated with the Mumbai University and is one of those colleges where BMM is available. The rare course had rare functioning as not just the classes but we used to have a lot of practicals as the course demands that. Sophia is an educational institute where studies are always kept as the number one priority irrespective of other plans. Well, honestly, there were not many of other plans other than some guest lectures and some off-campus activities as a part of the course. The education here needs no special thinking as everyone in Mumbai dearly knows that if they want to study then there’s no better place than Sophia. For other activities though which are essential other colleges like Jai Hind, and Xavier’s are better.

Star or should I say superstar quality faculties were present at Sophia College for Women. All of them with a decorated master’s degree and some of them even PhD were the ones who used to teach us. Some of them also were professionals who took time off their profession to take some guest lectures. Well, it might be a Christian college but when it comes to faculty they were purely chosen on Merit as there was no Christian quota for faculties like the college has for students. The faculties also appreciated the fact and always promoted that education shouldn’t be based on reservations. Trust me some of them were SC and OBC and still they promoted that. Hence, faculties here were unbiased as they right felt that education or rather quality education should be imparted to all those who are willing to have it.

Well, Sophia College placement cell is very active and they assisted us in the best way they could. We were hired by some local media firms but at a very petty salary. I had plans of higher studies but decided to have my first shot at a job and therefore working as a freelancer for some media houses gave me experience and also made me realize the shortcoming that I have with my studies.

Sophia College Mumbai has a great hostel but the rooms are available only on three-seater facilities. One doesn’t have a choice but to stay with two other girls. The hostels are in a way fine as the rooms are good but because I was non-hosteller I was not allowed inside the premises as it was that strict. 7 pm was strict in time and warden used to check girl’s room and if any girl was absent straightaway a call was given to her parents or guardians.

Sophia is one of the most beautiful colleges of Mumbai University. You all must have seen Main Hoon Na, the movie was shot here as the entire climax was shot here. The red coloured building had three entrance points as one entrance was straight to BMM section and we were lucky that our classes were held on ground floor. The library and auditorium were one of the best. There are two multipurpose halls and an AV Hall. The library is big and had a big reading hall too. The canteen is pathetic but the coffee shop was amazing. There was also a book store inside the campus and one Xerox center.

The college activities were never ending as there were three main events of the college. One was peace fortnight; one was Ananya and the annual fest Kaleidoscope was just too amazing. I had a great time at the campus as BMM students’ life was anyways quite happening and it was BMM students’ duty to cover the entire event and edit the videos and then upload on college page and social media platforms. So, along with performing, we also had our campus internship going on because we had to work post the events too.
