School of Broadcasting and Communication M.A Review By Neha Pandey

Modern day higher studies aspiring students look up to Media and Communication as one of the best courses to study. Our course had students of various streams and that made our classes even more interesting. When one chooses this course, they tend to carry that this course will make them famous. Yes, once you become a journalist that comes on TV, you will certainly be famous but for that to happen one has to spend at least 5-7 years on ground to understand how stories are sold. I chose as SBC Mumbai as there are many mass communication colleges in India but most of them are not approved by education bodies of India and therefore pick and choose the ones those are legit. SBC is one of those and mind you is also one of the best. I was always a person who like meeting new people, find interest in creative things like writing, and free to express my own ideas. SBC allowed all of that and therefore for me it was a dream come true college.

My previous institute Sophia College taught me the subjects and SBC allowed me to have practical applications of all that as the college had so many labs to learn from. SBC helped in developing various skills that were required to build a career in journalism. Broadcasting techniques are so complicated that spending 6-7 hours in college were simply not enough. Luckily my parents gave me freedom and I used to spend as long as I wanted to be in the college. Since broadcast journalism enticed me the most, I chose that and we were taught how journalists do their researches and then report their respective news channels, web portals or radio. We worked closely with all of those to understand all of it. All, in all, SBC helped me develop skills such as reporting, writing, and video productions.

I don’t know how the college has agreed to bring all the big names of the industry come here as many journalists, anchors, and reporters were the ones who took our lectures. One of the famous celebrities who took some lectures was the famous TV celebrity Mini Mathur. One of the faculty was working with a magazine and he developed our skills in penning down variety of content such as articles and how to write feature stories that they become sellable. During my internship which I got with the help of one of my faculties, I did interview few celebrities.

The placements didn’t happen at campus but the college name was so prestige that getting placements before the completion of course was the simplest of task at SBC. There’s a lot of competition so the saying that one has to be present at the right place at the right time. I tried my best to take my back off campus and be among the reputed people of the industry so that all my work is noticed. I myself took up some difficult projects and worked with crew members as I knew this is how I will be starting. So, at the end getting job was in our hand as maintain a good relationship with faculty was enough to become a part of any newspaper or magazine because getting into Television media was a bit tough.

Well sorry, there was no hostel facility and still many outsiders came to SBC to pursue studies from here. Well, it’s because in the western belt, SBC is the best college to learn any form of journalism or communication. PGs were easily available and Andheri is reasonable too.

Has anyone been to theatres of London as our auditorium was just like that. I also have never been to London but have seen some drama of UK and the kind of theatre they show is how exactly our auditorium looked like. Library is a place where students go by choice but at SBC library there was book reviews or case studies presentation and therefore, we had to go there even if didn’t wanted to be. Now coming to the labs as they were the ones which were occupied the most, there was an editing lab, an audio video editing lab, and of course a computer lab among others. The canteen was small and I mostly went out for food as there were many good restaurants near the college.

Well, every week, we had to prepare a short film on the stories that we covered and was presented in front of the class. Journalism is about confidence and by doing so, it gave me a lot of confidence that I was ever ready to face the camera if I had to. We did workshops at some of the most exotic places in India like Goa, Himachal and Uttarakhand. The annual event or rather the fest UTSAV was organized twice in a year to ensure that students are also engaged with other things too.
