Gauhati University's University Law College for Your LLB

After completing my B.Com in 2022, I decided to make a switch and shift to studying Law. Being a graduate pursuing 5-year LLB from an NLU was not an option and when I researched about the colleges offering 3 year LLB this is when I came across my college that is University Law College, Gauhati University. University Law College (ULC), established in the year 1948 located at Jalukbari within the Gauhati University Campus. Spending one and a half year in this college, it has been a great experience and the teachers who are extremely dedicated towards the students has always helped me out not only with my academics but also in shaping my legal career. The best part about this college is that, apart from providing a great academic course, this college also provides students sufficient time during the semester to learn along Senior Advocates and other legal professionals during the course itself, thus helping them build a strong legal base. Overall, this college provides a great environment for students to build a legal career not only academically but also taking necessary steps towards developing the skills to build a great legal career.

The motive behind choosing ULC, GU was because this is one of the premier and oldest Law college in the entire of North East India. Producing several famous legal faces over the years that includes eminent Jurists, notable lawyers, and other legal professionals across the country was also one of the key reasons why I opted for this college. Admission in this college is by examinations that test the knowledge base of the student in different aspects that includes knowledge about Current Events, History, General Awareness, English, Reasoning, and Mathematics. The eligibility criteria for appearing in the entrance test is a degree in any discipline from a recognized university with a minimum of 40% aggregate marks for OBC, ST, and SC candidates and minimum of 45% aggregate marks for other category candidates. Once enrolled, there are two sessional exams conduced every semester along with a seminar presentation for each particular paper and viva examination based on the seminar report. Along with it, by the end of every semester that lasts for six months, end semester exams are conducted every six months. Overall, this college covers a wide range of legal subjects of the country along with knowledge of certain State Laws of Assam. Overall, studying here, the academic course prepares students with in-depth knowledge every aspect of law.

The fee of LLB is paid yearly which varies batch to batch but ranges from ten thousand to fifteen thousand per year. In my batch, the admission costed Rs. 14,400, Rs. 10,480 in the second year and Rs. 1,500 in the third year. There are not special discounts provided to any students.

The college has great bunch of faculty, which contains a total of 5 Assistant professors and 15 Teaching Associates. Each faculty member comes with their own expertise and extremely dedicated towards the students and each being students of esteemed law college of the country, which includes the likes of Government Law College, Guwahati, University of Goa, and Gauhati University. The teaching method used is traditional one, which contains the use of blackboard, and no PPTs. The faculty members are very grounded and approachable and always available for the help of students.

There is no placement cell in the college but being such an esteemed institution, once passed out from this college the alumni network serves as a great help for students to start their journey.

The hostel facility is extremely good. There are three hostels available, which are separate hostels for boys, and girls. These hostels are: AT-9 for boys and AT-2 & RCC 2 for girls. The quality of mess food is hygienic providing food three times a day. The hostel fees costs Rs. 1,500 per month. The curfew time for hostels are 8 pm in the evening.

The college is situated in the GU campus itself conducting its LLB classes in an AT class room for the first and second year students and in the RCC building for the third year students. The Class capacity is 60 students per classroom. The college has a great law library and a seminar hall along with a moot court hall that is a great attraction. Along with this, there are stadium, gymnasium, seminal hall, canteens, GU hospital, etc. From the point of view of my course, the Moot Court of ULC is the best part of the college.

The overall experience has been a great. The college provides a great academic course along with extremely skilled and dedicated teachers. The course cannot be considered as an expensive course thus affordable for students from various economical backgrounds. Along with the academic course, the college contains the music and the drama club, which provides students opportunity to grow also apart from the bookish knowledge. There is the Leguleian feast and the Law Week conducted annually. Further, there are moot court and debate competitions conducted by the college regularly and the students are taken for Legal Aid Camps. In short, ULC is a one-stop solution for not only a great legal career but also in building a great life.
