SVNIT Surat: Academics, Extracurriculars, and Cultural Fests

For my overall experience in SVNIT Surat, I will rate it 8/10. It is because of its decent level of theory education and good level of research support by the professors and surrounding students. The college has a good atmosphere for research studies. The institute mainly focuses on research and development. The Mechanical, Civil, and Electronics are the most active and growing branches here. The particular reason to choose this institute was that it is ranking among top 7 NITs in India for ECE and I was interested in ECE also. I suggest students to come here if they are interested in their holistic development.

I am doing B.Tech in ECE branch. The eligibility criteria to take admission are simple, you have to clear JEE Main exam and score above 75% in class 12th boards. The cutoff is typically 97 percentile in JEE Main for my branch. M.Sc have cutoff of around 90 percentile. After the exam, you have to enroll in CSAB and then you get your seat here. Talking about the institute’s academics, there are 2 exams per semester. First one is mid semester exam and other one is end semester exam. Also, we have 2 quizzes and 2 unit tests per semester. Academics and papers are based on real life problems or we can say application based, so that you can improve your skills and are industry ready.

Semester wise tuition fee for my course is Rs. 67,500. Rs. 7,500 is paid as exam fee, stationary charge, etc. SC/ST category students get 100% concession in their tuition fee. Concession in fee is offered for students with family income less than 25 LPA.

Faculty members have good experience and are highly qualified in their respective subjects. All the professors have PhD and mostly have their graduation done from IITs and NITs. Teaching method of every faculty member is different. Some of them teach with the help of PPTs and some use whiteboard. Most of the professors teach on whiteboard, they are so knowledgeable that they don't even carry a book with them during lectures. Mostly, all of them have published their journals and research papers. Some of the faculty members have also contributed in some books. Faculties are very helping and encouraging for core studies and research & Development. I am glad to be taught by such faculty members.

The placement scenario of the institute is slightly weak. We have placement cell which is active, honestly saying that it became active since last 2 to 3 years, before that it was kind of slow, but now it is growing and placements are improving. The cell supports the students by approaching companies and tries to get them in campus for placements. Companies like Nvidia, Samsung, JP Morgan, Cadence, STM, AMD, Intel, etc. come for campus placements. Most of the students here are interested in IT companies so; core electronics companies get fewer students. IT companies also come for placements.

SVNIT Surat has hostel facilities inside the campus. We have different hostels for each year to avoid chaos and students can live without any fear of seniors, though there is no ragging. We have to shift from old hostel to new hostel every year. Each room is allotted to 2 students, which provides safety and protects student’s privacy. However, from 3rd year onwards we get single seater rooms. Both gender hostels are within the campus but are little distant from each other. The hostel rules are simple, we can stay out of hostel any time, but we have to be in campus, being outside of campus after 11:30 PM is not allowed for hostel students. 1st year students can't stay out of the hostel after 10:30. They get this freedom from 2nd year onwards. Also, table tennis, chess, and carom facilities are available in every hostel so students can play these indoor games anytime. Hostels have night canteens also; we have tea, coffee, noodles, egg, etc. Night canteen opens from 10:30 PM and closes at 3:00 AM in night. Mess food is decent, it is better than other hostels mess. It has decent taste and healthy food is served. Also, we get special menu on festivals or special days. The hostel fee is Rs. 19,500 per semester. Mess charge is around Rs. 7,000 to Rs. 10,000.

We have different buildings for each department. Each department has classrooms, seminar halls, faculty cabins, and labs. Mechanical and Civil Engineering departments have more buildings as they need more big labs. Every classroom has capacity of around 100 to150 students at a time with projectors connected with smart boards. Library is the best place in the whole campus; it is air conditioned and has a noise free relaxing environment to study peacefully. Library has Wi-Fi routers, comfortable chairs, and big tables for group studies. It has all the books for every branch and also of literature, Psychology, and Philosophy. Also, journals and research papers are available in library. Canteen has a variety of good quality food at affordable price, since it does not have good accommodating capacity so; another canteen is being constructed in the campus. We have health center inside the campus for primary cure. We have basketball court, lawn tennis, volleyball, badminton court, etc. and grounds for football and cricket.

My overall campus life is absolutely good, joyful, and enthusiastic. The campus has very good atmosphere and environment to roam around. We play games and sometimes just hangout. There are limited students so resources are more than enough. All the students are talented here. There are clubs for every extracurricular activity like dancing, singing, acting, photography, drawing, literature, chess, research & development, entrepreneurship, and startups. We have support and committees for every activity so, we don't only study but also enjoy and develop other skills too. There are two fests organized in a year; one is ‘Mindbend’, is Gujarat's biggest techno-managerial fest and second one is ‘Sparsh’, which is institute's cultural fest. In 'Sparsh' bollywood singers, bands, and DJs are invited and it is very exciting. Overall, campus life is not boring, but exciting and enthusiastic.
