National Institute of Technology B.Tech Review By Ranjith Kumar

I grew up in Bangalore and from a very early age, I decided to do Engineering from NIT, Warangal. My dad also passed out from the same college and hence I too decided to follow his footsteps. To get admission, one has to clear AIEEE exams and that too with high numbers as among various NITs, NIT, Warangal requires some extra numbers. This is arguably one of the premier institutes in the country and every year people from all across the country enroll in NIT, Warangal. The best part is that all the students be north Indians or south Indians, all students were on the same page at the college. The teachers made sure that no discrimination to be made among the students. The college is built in a vast area and has all the facilities that one can ask for. The college was previously known as REC (Regional Engineering College). The college was built way back in 1959 and is the oldest NITs among all the 30 NITs. The institute staff and faculty are dedicated. The institute has a state-of-the-art infrastructure that is conducive for a healthy environment for studies. By the time, I have heard about the college, the college has scaled new highs in terms of technical excellence. The college has adopted effective and innovative teaching methods to make sure the students never get burdened by the studies.

The college's strength is nearly 4000 including all the 13 departments that the college runs. NIT, Warangal is indeed a residential institute and nearly 80 percent of the students reside on the college campus and so do the teaching staff. The college is lush green and that helps in maintaining a cool temperature throughout the year. Having said that, I will mention about the placement cell of the college. The placement cell ensured that the students who maintained good grades were placed up front. In addition to studies, the college also organizes a cultural fest called SpringSpree. Many students participate and various colleges to participate in the cultural fest that our college organizes. Also, a sports fest is held every year and the teams from all the NITs are invited to our college as we have the largest area. The college fees though in the last few years have increased quite a bit. In a nutshell, NIT, Warangal not just taught me engineering but also values as well.

The academic calendar is jam-packed and one will have to say the reason why 30 percent of students drop out in the first years is the toughness of studies. However, I will have to say that the teachers left no stone unturned to make sure that the maximum result is produced. The college is ranked among the top 30 engineering colleges of India and for that academics should be credited. The syllabus is in line with other NIT’s but having said that the portion is too large to cover in one semester. Students hardly find time to indulge their time in other activities.

The lectures run for over 8 hours daily and that too gets hectic sometimes. The teaching staff though is available even after the study hours in case of doubts. The academic is what has helped me where I am today so complaining that much won’t be ideal. The college has over 100 labs and attending practical sessions was compulsory. The attendance too was 80 percent compulsory. The students who failed to garner that attendance became a subject of strict action.

I think I have said enough about the toughness of studies but let me make amends for that by praising the faculty. The faculty is entirely dedicated to its students and is always there to help students out. The faculty always provide the teaching methods that we are hardly left with any doubts. The length of the portion didn’t matter as the faculty more often than not covered the entire portions twice. This was the best part as the students who failed in the first go always had another shot at it.

The faculty was easy to go to as they stayed in the campus and in case of any doubts they used to call the students in the common area even after the college hours. What else can we expect and 10 on 10 for the faculty that we had. All the staff was highly qualified and their teaching methods were something which I never saw elsewhere. I wish them more power and give our country some of the finest engineers that they have already produced.

This is my favorite part as nearly all the students who cleared all their semesters without back were placed and placed handsomely. Companies like L&T, HCL Tech, TCS, and Tech Mahindra were the top recruiters. The students who had back were hardly placed and that I felt was a bit too harsh as the students as clearing all the subjects in one go was extremely tough. However, some of them still found a campus placement while others after passing got jobs easily on the back of the reputation that our college possessed.

The average annual package was around Rs. 5.5 lakhs and the highest went all the way to Rs. 14 lakhs. Our batchmate was hired by L&T at that package and is in the U.S. as of now. He like many other students will always be thankful to NIT, Warangal for getting us placed marque companies.

Boys and girls hostels are separate. In all, there are some 18 wings and every room has 2 occupants. The hostel rooms were a little small but had all the facilities like a study table with led, Wi-Fi, and attached bathrooms. Each floor of the hostel had a RO water cooler and water was available at will. Yes, ragging is done by the seniors but the college has zero-tolerance towards that. Also, some students used to smoke in the hostel, and even after complaints were lodged not much action was taken.

I was lucky that I was a localite and therefore was allowed to stay at my place. Having said that students staying in the hostel had their fun and the hostel had gyms and indoor sports facilities which help them unwind after a hectic day at studies. The hostel had a mess and the meals cost around INR 60. The food though had a south Indian menu on maximum occasions.

NIT, Warangal is built across 250 acres and is one of the largest NITs. The college has a central library which has nearly 200k books. I wonder have you seen such a huge library but yes NIT, Warangal has it. The college has nearly 18 hostel buildings with all the basic facilities. The college has a huge playground with a basketball court, tennis court, volleyball court, cricket, football, and hockey grounds. Every year the college hosts a sports fest where students from all the NITs come and participate in various sports.

There are nearly 100 labs in the college and that is something which I never imagined. You name it and they have it from the computer lab to physics lab, design and simulation lab, high voltage lab, and mechanical lab among others. The college has 3 canteens and one huge cafeteria which are open till 10 pm. The college is totally Wi-Fi and has a shuttle auto service to go to nearby places. There’s a hospital inside the campus that has all the medical facilities. There’s also a huge gym on the college campus. For entertainment, the college has a dance room and music room. The campus also has a huge conference hall and a large auditorium.

Life at NIT, Warangal was something that I will always cherish. Since 80 percent attendance was compulsory, we had to be in classes during college hours. The campus is laced with all the facilities required for engineering students such as the canteen, shopping complex, and sporting facilities among others. On off days, students used to spend maximum time on playgrounds as they hardly get time to play sports.

Our college has a Centre for Career Planning and Development that helped in aiding campus recruitment. The college has produced some of the greatest engineers and being a Dasa student will always infuse confidence in me. If one has survived 4 years in NIT, Warangal then trust me, you will achieve anything you have wished for. Hope my true review gives you a fair idea about the institution and if you are ready to grind and become something in life then do join NIT, Warangal. I have created some of my finest memories at the college campus and they are going to remain with me forever.
