Government College of Engineering B.Tech Review By Shashank Shetty

Government Engineering College Aurangabad also abbreviated as GECA. The college is one of the oldest engineering colleges in Maharashtra, established way back in the year 1960. The GECA offers various engineering courses and courses on Computer Applications; the location of the college is too at the prime location of the city, where you can easily reach through different modes of transport.

Recently the college has been given the status of autonomy before it used to be affiliated to Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Marathawada University (BAMU). After getting the autonomous status, the college has got a kind of freedom to teach their course according to the syllabus that has been designed by the college teachers themselves also the college is now free to conduct its own exam like setting up the paper by the teachers of the colleges and giving grades to the students too rest upon the teachers of the college only. This was also one of the reasons that made me select this college over other colleges, as giving exams in an autonomous college is just like giving exams in our schools where the paper was made and even corrected by the subject teacher itself, this makes the things quite simpler.

The college has been ranked 53rd by the Times Group. Being a student of Information Technology (IT) for B.Tech course of 4 years of this esteemed college, I would be sharing is to why did I opt in for this college. The fact that the college was established in the year 1960, that makes one of the primary reason for me opting for this college. Alumni base of the college is great due to its numerous generations of students who had been passed out through this college and have been placed in various good MNC’s during the course of about 60 years, is the best thing that the college is offering. In terms of ranking the college stands around 7th in the entire state of Maharashtra and in the Marathawada region, it is the best engineering college.

Since the time I had joined the college due to safety of the students owing to the ongoing pandemic that is still prevailing, the classes of the course is going on in online mode. The way of the teaching the subject is best by the faculties, as it is in any other engineering college in Maharashtra.

The teachers over here are mostly M.Tech or either PhD in their respective subjects. Each faculty tries to explain the things in as lucid way as possible and also we are provided with assignments which need to be completed before the stipulated time period that has been allotted by the teacher.

As I got to know about the placements facts of the Government College of Engineering from the scenarios that I have experienced through years or have listened from the seniors that have been graduated out from the college. The average package that is provided by the college to the students is mediocre that is around Rs. 5-6 Lacs.

The highest package is as per the trend is always grabbed away by the computer science students followed by the ENTC ones and the rest. Over the years I have perceived about the placement scenario is that you won’t need to worry about these things if you would have studied well and would religiously work on the skills that are required for the job that you want to apply into.

Though I haven't been part of the hostel of the college what the insights that I have got through my friends who are living in the hostel have said something about these things. There are two separate hostels for girls and boys each and there are around 65 vacancies for boys and around 80 vacancies for girls.

The best thing about the hostel is fees that is around Rs.5000 for the entire year. The quality of the rooms is decent I wouldn't say it is great but it is as it is in any other government college hostels. If you opt for the mess facility you will be given quite moderate food at the best price.

The campus is spread out in evergreen area of 25 Acres, with various buildings of different branches that college offers. You can always stroll down the entire campus anytime you feel bored out. There are 6 branches and the college has 4 different building of all the courses that the college offers. The department of Computer Science and Engineering (CSE), Information Technology (IT) and Electronics and Telecommunications (ENTC) has a combined departmental building, while the Department of Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering and Electrical Engineering each have their own departmental building. The computer labs for conducting various practical’s are well equipped with various appliances’ that works absolutely fine.

Talking about the overall development of personality as a student in this college is great. The kind of people you are surrounded with actually decide which type of person you become and this also holds true in this case as well because the students that may be studying in this college will be among the top layer of students in the entire state that will help you in developing various aspects that are required for being a good person. In these four years, your goal must be to learn as many skills as possible that will eventually help you at the time of placements.

Overall GECA is the best place to learn and enjoy your life’s most precious 4 years. The college has annual fest known as Wings, this is a combination of technical and cultural fest that takes place in engineering once in a year. Wings is an annual event that has entirely been managed and run by students itself. In this fest students can showcase their talents be it in terms of coding, painting, dancing, singing or be it anything you like. The Wings acts as a platform where you can showcase talents to the students not only of your own college but also the students of the other college that comes as spectators to witness the enthusiasm of the students. Hosting the events instill the quality of working as a team towards a thing among us. Every year a renowned celebrity is invited to the college and this too is carried by the student’s community itself.
