It was a full time MBA program where we studied some of the best cases studies and understood the story of sports boards and leagues becoming rich from rags. One such exciting case study was of BCCI. Does anyone know that BCCI didn’t have the money to organize the 1987 World Cup and it was Dhirubhai Ambani who bailed out BCCI then. People may call Lalit Modi absconded but it was he who brought all the money to BCCI. BCCI today is one of the richest boards and one that has its case studies being studied even at the Harvard. Thus, studying case studies and understanding what sports management is all about is what we learned at the campus.

To study sports science, until a few years back, we only had one option, to go abroad. The MBA in sports management offered by SSSS had a tie-up with many media houses, sports leagues, and international universities. The course taught us all the challenges that a sporting body faces or the agencies connected with sports. Since, the course caters to global demands, football and tennis, which are the most marketable sports, we covered the dynamics of those sports in our curriculum. One thing that surprised me about the sport was that Cricket was the second most popular sport in the world in terms of viewership. The three biggest learning of the course was technical aspects in sports, event management of the sports, and sports marketing. The course had a more practical methodology so that we can learn about the ground reality.

If you think that this course is easy then my friend you are horribly wrong. We had to study a lot as just like MBA Finance or HR there are case studies in Sports Management. How sports have grown over the years and how sports have inked so much of money. In one of our case studies we learned that Brazilian footballers of 1960s were driving taxis at the backend of their lives to meet their end. Now a footballer if plays couple of seasons for a European club they can live rest of their life without any financial burden. It was amazing to read such stories and as a sports manager we have to manage the wealth of players or run sports team or sports management firms. The course includes a six-month internship with an international sporting firm. Thus, while studying we learned all the mathematics attached with sports management.
