What is JEE Main?
JEE Main, also known as the Joint Entrance Examination (Main) is a National level examination that is held for granting admission to the qualifying students in the Undergraduate Engineering programs viz., B.E / B.Tech offered at various prestigious Institutions including NITs, IIITs, Centrally Funded Technical Institutions (CFTIs), and the Institutions & Universities funded / recognised by the participating State Governments.

What is JEE Advanced?
The Joint Entrance Examination (Advanced), popularly known as JEE (Advanced) is also an all India entrance test. Through this test, the qualifying students are eligible for pursuing their higher education in various programs in the IITs.
The programs into which students can take admission through JEE Advanced scores are B.Tech, Bachelor of Science (BS), Bachelor of Architecture (B.Arch), Integrated M.Tech / BS-MS, and Dual Degree (BS-MS / B.Tech – M.Tech / B.Tech- MBA, BS- MBA).

Eligibility Criteria of JEE Main

- 12th Standard / Intermediate / PUC from a recognised Board

- A 3-year Diploma that is recognised by AICTE / any State Board of Technical Education.
- A 2-year program of the Joint Services Wing of the National Defense Academy
- Higher Secondary Certificate Vocational Examination
- Any Board / Public School / University exam in India or outside is recognised as equivalent to Class 12th by AIU
- High School Certificate Examination at Cambridge University / International Baccalaureate Diploma of the International Baccalaureate Office, Geneva
- 12th Standard / equivalent from outside the nation or from any other Board which is not stated above is required to have a certificate from the AIU
- If the 10 + 2 exam is not considered as a public examination, students must have qualified at least one public examination prior (Board or Pre-University)

- For B.E / B.Tech: Passed qualifying examination with Physics and Mathematics as compulsory subjects along with Chemistry / Biotechnology / Biology / Technical Vocational subjects.

- For B.Planning: Passed the requisite qualifying exam with Mathematics
*There is no minimum and upper age limit for students to appear in the JEE Main.
Eligibility Criteria of JEE Advanced
Students must keep the following points in mind to be able to appear in JEE Advanced:
- Must have qualified Paper I of JEE Main and be among the top 2,50,000 rank holders.
- Should have appeared in the Class 12th in the same respective year or 1 year earlier.
- Students born on or after 1st October 2000 (5-year relaxation for SC / ST / PwD candidates) can appear for JEE Advanced.

Paper Pattern and Marking Scheme for JEE Main
The Paper 1 of the JEE Main will consist of 90 questions for a total of 300 marks. There is a significant difference between JEE Mains and JEE Advanced marking pattern. For the Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs) & Numerical Value Questions of JEE Main, students will be allocated 4 marks for every correct response, and 1 mark will be reduced for each of the wrong answers. No marks will be deducted for the unattempted questions. Furthermore, 4 marks will be granted for the questions that have been found wrong or are dropped due to human / technical error to the candidates who have attempted the same.

Paper Pattern and Marking Scheme for JEE Advanced
There is a huge difference between JEE Mains and JEE Advanced. The paper for JEE Advanced is divided into two parts namely, Paper 1 and Paper 2. The question paper comprises questions from Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics subjects. Both the papers carry 180 marks each which makes a total of 360 marks.

Difference Between JEE Main and JEE Advanced: Number of Attempts
JEE Main is conducted in two sessions every year. Session 1 is generally held in January and Session 2 in April. Students can attempt JEE Main 6 times in 3 consecutive years. If the students don’t perform well in the first session they can appear for the second session without having to wait for the next year.
On the other hand, students can appear for JEE Advanced maximum two times in two consecutive years after being shortlisted in JEE Main is the other major JEE Mains and Advanced difference.
