KJ Somaiya Institute of Management MBA Review By Mahesh Prajapai

Since it has been sometime since I have passed out from this college I don’t think remember all of it. Will still share my thoughts on the college that has landed me to a beautiful life once I finished my post-graduation from the college. I was a part of SIMSR back in 2014-2016 batch. My journey at the college began with a week long program that included various sessions on anger management, placement opportunities and others. The beginning of the session was nothing short of a ride as in the second week, the college has a tradition of organizing a fest, All Izz Well where each new student has to showcase his/her talent be it singing, dancing, or acting. This actually made our connect stronger with our seniors and teachers. The people who did well started getting extra attention and unfortunately though I missed out on that I was not good in that. It was after that, that our actual journey at the college started with lectures, presentations, and attending guest lectures, case study and of course project report making.

Well the academic part has been taken care by some of the finest faculties and here I will discuss the project that we were assigned during our term. One such mega project that we worked upon was Marvel. Our case study included presentation, analytics, market research, and bidding process as well. The timetable was a blocked one as there was absolutely no schedule. Every week we had weekly tests, presentations, and of course many other activities to be taken care of. Live projects were the way at the institute and that was a learning curve as in graduation we never thought of anything like this will ever happen. In all, the education system at KJSIMR is well planned and thought and something that will relate you to the modern world and what changes we might expect in future. The semesters are divided in trimesters and therefore there are six semesters in all.

On faculty front, I would say some of them were below par, not all but some of them definitely were. All of them though have a great experience in teaching and has industrial exposure as well. It’s actually the unnecessary addition of courses that has made the faculty a bit vulnerable. The college will have to do something about it as by the time I passed out and if you look at it today the rankings have dropped. The reason I already mentioned as the faculty members are below par.

The placements were fine and were not much to bother about. From financial firms, to FIIs, to IT sectors many companies were there to take care of this aspect. The real problem started with the package that they offered. I worked as an intern at BNP Paribas and they were happy with my work as well. They hired me through campus but was disappointed with the CTC that I was offered. Not just me, the placement has dropped at the institution and by paying Rs. 14 lakhs fees getting a job of half of what we paid as fees is not worth it. The average was between Rs. 7-9 lakhs per annum and Mumbai being the financial capital the numbers are disappointing for sure.

The college has a hostel but again not worth it. A tiny room is provided to accommodate three and it was not a compulsion to stay at the hostel. However, rooms would have hardly mattered as there was no time to spend in rooms and the hostel had a huge common area and that was the place where students used to gather and do their chores post college. Socializing was the best part that hostel taught the students and me not being a part of that was always missed. The hostel also provided food and that too 4 times in a day. Students like me who were non-hostelities were not allowed to enter the premised and I am saying all this from what I heard from my friends. From there experience I can say that one must experience a hostel life once in their lifetime.

The college area is big and so are the facilities. The college has all the sporting facilities from an outdoor sports ground to indoor sports complex. There is also a small gym and is equipped. The library is elephantine and it has n numbers of books. Also. Library was the best place to go and read as there were many magazines, daily newspapers and an enormous study area. The campus also has a racing track, a canteen and particularly everything. This is quite common these days but still worth mentioning that class rooms of KJSIMR are air-conditioned.

The college provided a lot of opportunities and that actually made me a better version of myself. The life at the college was hectic but not difficult and at the end of the day worth it. The seniors and co-students are friendly and are always ready to help. The events helped us show our other talents as well and there I am sitting comfortably at a position after passing out from this college. Few positives and few negatives that I have mentioned are from the bottom of my heart.
