S G M English Medium College of Commerce and Management B.Com Review By Rojo Joseph

Staying in Vadodara and having heard a lot about SEMCOM from childhood, I took admission here. Firstly, I would say that after 12th don’t try to go for B.Com and prepare for entrance of some of the famous colleges to get admission in management UG courses. The reason why I am saying this after doing B.Com, I did MBA and trust me to adapt there was by no means easy. Coming back to SEMCOM, it’s a good college and the name that it has built over the years is for some reasons. SEMCOM may not be a nationwide known college but is one of the best in Gujarat for sure. Being a normal commerce college, the placement can be out of question but not with SEMCOM. The college has transcended its peers in terms of placements. Not just the studies but you will find all kind of talent here. The college students of my college has aced at various state level competitions. Many NGOs and clubs have many active students from our college.

Academic wise the college is pretty good as the attendance is compulsory and the course even though is easy the college has tried to make it tough by giving us assignments that are not relevant to studies. I once came to know that the same assignments are given to BBA students as well. Seriously, if we were to do such assignments, we could have chosen BBA. Anyways this is part and parcel at SEMCOM as for them nothing comes easy. Nevertheless, the college has produced toppers at the University level time and again and that is all because of the sheer hard work being put forward in academic part.

The degrees that they hold is something that only the college professors can hold because in normal life I have not seen such people. One of the professors even left his bank job and became a professor. He is paid half of what he was earning in his bank but as he himself said that teaching is his passion and that is why he travels 30 miles daily to pursue his passion. The motive behind me telling his story is that all the teachers are so dedicated and that is why the faculty of this college is unmatched. Most of the professors from our department were Ph.D. and simultaneously were busy with their research work as well.

First of all, if you have chosen B.Com means you were never serious about the placements. At least I wasn’t and so were most of my classmates. The placement cell of the college kept pushing us to try hard so that we can get placed. There were few companies that attended the campus but just 1 bank. You want to know what job they offered. Salesman, as you will be asked to bring in new accounts. These were the kind of jobs that B. Com students were offered but at least they were offered and that is why the placement graph of the college has gone up in this decade.

If there’s one thing that needs some improvement, then that is college hostel. The hostel accommodation aspect of the college needs revamp and need it quickly. In comparison to the colleges that hold values SEMCOM is lacking. The quality of the hostel is Oh My God!! I don’t think I should say more as the management during our time did mention that they have taken note of this and will change things. I hope they do as most students were from Vadodara and Nadiad so at least rather than going home they can take this option of staying at the hostel.

SEMCOM is all about a building that shifts all the departments that it has. All the facilities like library, canteen, and auditorium were in the same building. There is nothing much that infrastructure can be talked about but yes again the canteen. First the hostel which is outside the college building and then the canteen that is inside the college building needs to change. The canteen’s tea is still decent but other than that is pathetic. The sporting facilities are provided at the Sardar Patel ground and many students who are a part of college sports team are allowed to go and practice there at will.

All my friends who were studying in other colleges and pursuing the same course used to laugh as they said B.Com students and busy. This is a hard reality, but I was fine with it as the college provided us many opportunities beyond academics to show one and all what we have got. The life at the campus was fun as the bus to Vadodara was available every 10 minutes. Daily 1 hour in bus and that is how I used to reach the college. Never felt tired but always enjoyed the journey as I knew that that campus will surprise me today. Every day something or the new, I learned at the campus and that made my life so enjoyable. Some NGOs have tied up with the college and we as a student did all that in our capacity to at least give a proof of we are humans. Hail SEMCOM from the core of my heart.
