Vardhaman College of Engineering M.Tech Review By Anisur Rahman

Gate score helped me get a seat in Vardhaman College of Engineering Hyderabad. VCE is again not that old a college but is among the stalwarts of engineering colleges. Some of the college branches are great while some are poor. There’s no in-between in this college and that can be termed a bane or a boon. Thankfully my branch ECE was great but lacked one problem the library didn’t have sufficient books for our course. There was a provision that you can demand a book and the library will get that shortly. Forget shortly even after questioning 100 times we only got excuses but not books. We finally got that from other colleges in Hyderabad. Faculty, again I would rate them average as some of them made student’s life dejected. I came to Hyderabad with a lot of heart and dreams. My dream got full filled as I got the job I wanted but definitely not the college life I imagined.

The college is affiliated with JNTU and that made it rather easier to have access to the course. No one goes for tuition in M.Tech but we had to as college never conducted lectures of time nor did they help us get our concepts clear. The college is of mild strictness when it comes to education as the college is busy promoting their events and students who have brought laurel to the college in other areas. Studies not only have taken a backseat but have also gone into dejection due to our HOD. Even the infrastructure of the classrooms was less as there were no projectors or good quality benches. The classes used to end by 4.30 and no student other than hostelites were allowed to stay in the college campus after 5pm.

Below-average and I mean it. M.Tech is a course that has more of a practical approach but at VCE the faculty have adapted to other means. Bring the full-size book and open a page read it and ask the students if they have any doubts. Not one or 2 but barring one or 2 all had the same system. When I saw the faculty profile, I was in complete shock. The Universities from which they have passed out I am sure don’t follow the same pattern. Even after asking them to change their approach, there were no signs of any changes, and even though attendance was strict most of us had attendance below 50%.

IT jobs are only what you are going to get no matter which branch you join. I still remember a student of CIVIL was hired by TCS and was sent to London to work in TCS (UK). Hence, no matter which branch you choose, IT job is what you will get. I obviously wanted that and got that from a top company. The average pay package was 7-8 Lakhs. Rs. 16 Lakhs was the highest during our batch and it made our lives miserable. Even though we had a job, we were only given his example that he has taken college’s name to scale heights while we have degraded the college name.

There are two hostels on the campus and both similar. The capacity of both boys and girls hostel was 300 and all rooms were on twin sharing. 3rd floor and 4th floors which had 20 rooms on each floor were reserved for M.Tech students. The rooms were on twin sharing and hostel I felt was better because the college is slightly outside the city. The hostel facility includes a small dining area. Each floor had a RO water machine and 2 TV rooms in the entire boy’s hostel. The hostel had a green surrounding and also a volleyball court next to the boys hostel building. We were allowed to play at night as the security made sure that we don’t cross the court area or beyond after 10pm.

The library was huge but didn’t have the books we required. CCTV cameras were installed right from the entrance to each floor of the buildings. A special event hall was there at the campus and B.Tech students took the maximum advantage of it as M.Tech and MBA students didn’t had a single event of their own. We were a mere spectator. The cafeteria was of some 3000 sq. feet and could easily feed 300-400 students at a time. The food at the college cafeteria was cheaper than the market. It was our fatigue remover and cafeteria was seen full during lunch breaks from 1-2pm. The college had a cricket ground that also had flood lights. Many domestic players are seen practicing at the college ground. There are 2 badminton, basketball and volleyball courts. The college campus also had a tennis court but I hardly saw anyone there. The city that has given a tennis sensation Sania Mirza and still the tennis court was covered with leaves as it was not at all maintained. There is also a huge gym with over 20 treadmills and all the modern equipment.

For me it was a military school. Wake up at 7 and get ready and reach classes by 9am. We had an hour long lunch break and free by 5pm. Cafeteria remained open only till 6 as that was our go-to spot after the classes were over. The college is happening but only UG students are seen enjoying as MBA and M. Tech students had nothing in store for them at the campus.
