Dr DY Patil College of Architecture B.Arch Review By Dheeraj Thakur

As its part of the DY Patil’s group, Dr DY Patil College of Architecture holds high esteem amongst the top architecture colleges under the Mumbai University board. Being a non-Mumbaikar I had to research in detail about the admission process and how to go about it. The process was quite simple as I could apply for colleges online. On the basis of my 12th std commerce percentile, I was quite fortunate to secure a seat in this reputed college. The phrase, “What’s in the name?”, falls apart when it comes to the DY Patil groups. Because, here, everything is in the name.

I pursued Bachelor of Architecture in this college. As I had always dreamt of becoming architecture and join my father in his business, I opted for this course under the big banner of DY Patil group. I was quite satisfied with the syllabus covered and the knowledge imparted during my 5 year degree course. The five years were divided in 4 years of academics and 6 months of two internships. This experience helped me start off with the work in my father’s company.

The faculty of my college was above average and taught us well. Besides their degree, they had sound teaching skills too. This helped me connect with the faculty and discuss my subjects in detail with them. Though the faculty members had not more than 20 years of experience, the knowledge they imparted into us is useful in all walks of life.

Placements was not my concern as I had my family business to take over. But for those who wanted to opt for a job post degree, faced a little struggle getting one because our college did not have companies coming in for recruitment. Unlike, Engineering campus placements there are rarely any architecture colleges offering placements. Students need to join small or big architecture firms according to their career ambitions.

As I was a non-mumbaikar, I had to look for a flat on rent by sharing it with another guy as our college did not have hostel facility. Getting a flat was not difficult task as there are plenty of brokers out there who can get you a great deal.

I was really impressed by the infrastructure of college which suited the architecture field. We had a standalone building with very little space around it. DY Patil groups had a massive campus and we used their playgrounds during sports tournaments. We had a beautiful auditorium where we attended the various seminars based on the future of architecture.

Architecture, as a field is really hectic. I remember staying up till 4 or even 5 in the morning for completing the sketches. Thus, fests and celebrations were often sidelined. But I did enjoy the campus life as DY Patil had a green campus. My friends and I sat on the green grass discussing our jury and internship plans.
