Dr DY Patil College of Architecture B.Arch Review By Sangita Rane

My college DY Patil College of Architecture had the boon of being part of the big banner DY Patil groups. The college has received decent rankings for its quality of education imparted. When it comes to management, this college is really slow. For example, I received my convocation only after 2 years of completing my degree. Well, that’s the story of several big colleges. But the admission process is easy and hustle-free. I would give 5.5/10 for the overall education system of my college which is situated in Nerul, Navi Mumbai.

I was passionate about buildings and designing ever since I was in school. Becoming architecture followed suite and I ended up pursuing my Bachelor of Architecture in Dr. D.Y.Patil College of Architecture. It was a 5 year degree course comprising of 4 years of academic studies and 1 year of internship - actually 2 internships of 6 months each. Both my internships were pretty high-profile which helped in the later stage in life for getting into a decent job. The syllabus covered was good which helped me gain a sound knowledge of all my subjects. I did my commerce and got into this college on an average percentile base.

We had a mixture of experienced professors and new staff. The new lecturers were merely a year or two elder than me. This helped in attaining a comfort zone and builds a good student-teacher bond. Despite being less experienced, there was no compromise on knowledge sharing. In fact, my professors were quite cooperative when it came to discussing studies. I would surely give the credits to my professors at some extent for being able to work in a reputed firm now.

We did not have proper placement cell in the college. Unlike engineering colleges there are no huge IT companies who recruit architects. Hence, we have to struggle a bit after passing out from college in search of jobs. I myself had to slog for a year to finally get a job in a small firm. But in case of my friends who had their family business, took over the business post completing their degree and their life was set.

DY Patil’s architecture college did not have a hostel block. But as the college is located in the mid of many rental flats, it was never a problem for students who came out of Mumbai to find a place for residing. Many of friends shared a flat and stayed near the college which saved them the travel allowance. One could never go hungry in a place like Nerul. You get the most affordable as well as hi-fi food in and around Nerul.

Unfortunately, my college did not have a canteen of its own. We went to the neighboring college’s canteen - i.e. of SIES college. These two colleges shared the same common wall. The college building also was a standalone one with not much space around it. We often went to RAIT College, another neighboring college and a part of the DY Patil group to experience the campus life. We did have medical and emergency support because the DY Patil hospital was just behind our college building.

I did not have a very happening campus life. But we enjoyed ourselves in KFC, Pizza Hut and our special hawkers on the footpath which were just outside our college. The fests of architecture college were not so happening either. We went to the neighboring colleges fests to experience the vibe - advantage of being surrounded by two big colleges. The college being in Navi Mumbai was a great thing as the vibe is different over here.
