Rather than comparing it with other institutes, I would just focus on writing about IIIT Delhi. The hype of the institute is such that people from any city of the North want to come here. I was no exception as Indraprastha Institute of Information Technology Delhi I found to the best place for learning and at the end of the day, I would say it was. If I look at the broader picture the infrastructure of the college is top class. I have never seen a student-faculty healthy relationship as good as IIITD Delhi elsewhere. The atmosphere of the college was so relaxed and normal that most of the students I met here were quite happy. Last but not the least it was the academic portion which was the best. As a student, I had to work really hard and there are no negotiations on missing the lectures. You will be asked 1000 questions and if your answer is not suitable you will be given punishments like school. You will be asked to write the same assignment 5 times and all. I hope I have given you an exact idea of the institute.
Too strict and we are loaded with assignments and projects in such a way that I had to yell in my room, Oh God, please give me 25 to life. Beating around the bust was not IIIT D and any miscommunication or misunderstanding of the subject was explained again and again. The faculty were strict and they can conduct tests randomly and if we don’t score enough there will be harsh actions against us. Doing PG at IIIT D is by no means a joke and the dropout ratio after the first semester is 40%. The portion was good as it has covered almost all the topics that will be required to shape the skills.
Industry-based studies is what they believed in and therefore the classroom was mostly set up at labs or the mechanical workshops. Unless and until we were shown the application of the study the faculty were not done. Sometimes they also took us in the fresh air and used all the 5-6 gardens of the college for taking the classes. That seemed cool but that didn’t make them any nicer towards us as their strict nature was always at their nose. They took care of us children and sipped coffees with us like our friends but were just too strict at times.
No local or a small corporate. IIIT Delhi Placement cell believed only in MNCs and that too with a strong pedigree. Tata Steel, Sail, Gail, Amazon, and EMC were the top names that showed up during the placement season. We had a compulsory internship program after the 2nd semester and some of these names already saw our work and knowledge. That was taken into consideration before the final placements and multi-bagger packages were offered. IIIT Delhi Average Package was around 14-15 Lakhs and some students got job offers over 25 lakhs as well. I said I won’t compare but this kind of placement record is incomparable anyways.
IIIT Delhi hostel is located just 500 meters from the college campus. There are 3 boys’ hostel and 1 girl’s hostel block. Calling them a hostel would be an injustice as there were residential flats. There are 22 rooms reserved in A block for married students. The hostels are well equipped and have nice beds, bookshelf, and cupboard. All the rooms have ACs and heaters which have access from the main room. ACs worked only during nights. The hostels have high-speed net connection and the hostel buildings are quite new because they started just 3 years before I joined the college in 2016. The mess area is also air-conditioned and it is common for all. The hostel area has an art room, medical room, and sports room in each block. There is a common area in each hostel building that has a TV set and daily newspaper of 4-5 languages are delivered there daily. There are 2 ATMs, a cafeteria, and a stationery shop on the ground floor of the B hostel.
From classrooms to labs everything is centrally air-conditioned at the campus. IIIT Delhi Campus is spread across 25 acres and the campus is green and has 5-6 gardens and 6 buildings in all. A 3-floor building equipped with indoor sports and gymnasium is built at the campus. There are some innovative labs at the campus such as Design & Innovation labs, language labs, and incubation centers. There is 1 canteen and 1 cafeteria at the campus. The library is located at the admin block of IIIT D and students are not allowed to enter the library without an I Card. The infrastructure can envy any college as it’s just so beautiful.
Some 15-20 clubs are operating at the college and each department has its 2-3 clubs. However, one is not confined to choose a club only of his/her department and students are free to choose whichever clubs they want. The college fests and tech events are attended by industry stalwarts and the talent of the college has been appreciated by them. The students are given an unlimited budget from the college if they are working on a project that requires huge funding. One can be a complete engineer if they pursue M.Tech from IIIT D. I am glad I was a part of such a lovely college.
