K J Somaiya College of Arts & Commerce B.Com Review By Ketan Parte

KJ Somaiya College of Arts and Commerce is an Autonomous College under the affiliation of the University of Mumbai. It is a part of the Somaiya campus and provides a variety of courses in Humanities and Commerce. I have been a student of KJSAC for over two years now and it has been a wonderful experience so far. The college has been Re-accredited 'A' Grade by NAAC twice and provides a great learning experience for students. The college management has very skillfully adopted the technological advancements since the last few years. KJ Somaiya Arts and Commerce admission processes as well as other facilities such as railway concession, grievance and redressal, etc. are handled through an online process that is hassle-free and easy to grasp. The college provides its students with a large scope for extracurricular activities that include sports, cultural committee, NSS and NCC among others. There are other departmental activities too that take place which is open for students of all academic backgrounds within the college.

I am a student of Bachelor of Commerce since 2019 in the college. Being an autonomous college my experience with the syllabus has been so far great. The syllabus is up-to-date and is revised every two years. Academically students are trained in a way that helps them shape their mind analytically which helps in the overall development of a student. For commerce students, the subject of psychology is also compulsory during their final year. This makes the syllabus more relevant to real-life as we study Business psychology which enhances our understanding of other subjects too.

The faculty in the college is quite learned and experienced. They are willing to help the students in all possible ways and make the teaching-learning process quite comprehensive and interactive which helps the students in better understanding of the subject. I personally have been attending lectures regularly and am quite fascinated seeing that the teachers try their best to include topics for discussion in class which otherwise the restrictive syllabus won't cover.

As far as placements are concerned, I am personally not aware of major placement programs that take place for degree students. However, the college does have tie-ups with Internshala that helps the students explore different possibilities of internships and jobs during and after their graduation years. Many departments from within the college regularly arrange special development skills lecture for the students that include Resume building, research related seminars and career guidance lectures for students of all academic backgrounds. This helps the students to develop themselves for future jobs while also providing them part-time employment facilities and internships through various such seminars.

I do not use the hostel facility of the college, but reviews from my batchmates living in the hostel seem quite satisfactory. Hostel rooms for girls and boys are different and the infrastructure for the same is quite good. KJ Somaiya College of Arts and Commerce hostel mess provides delicious home-like food which not just the students living in the hostel but other students studying on the campus can avail of its service too.

As mentioned earlier, the KJSAC Institution is a part of the Somaiya campus which is widespread in the Vidyavihar Region of Mumbai. The infrastructure of KJSAC is quite satisfactory as it has almost all required facilities such as spacious and well-ventilated classrooms, a library with more than 80,000 books, a Cultural Forum cabin for Cultural and festival-related activities, Boy's Common room and Girl's Common Room, and an indoor sports room. The KJSAC building also houses an Auditorium and Conference room for various fest-related activities, guest talks, cultural activities and departmental activities.

The Somaiya campus provides the students not only academic but extracurricular opportunities too. The campus has 3 canteens, an athletic ground, a Maggi House, a Human-sized chessboard, Tagore Amphitheatre, Football turf and many other facilities. The campus is encompassed with greenery and is also a space for various big festivals arranged by various institutes within the campus. The students can also avail courses from other Institutions belonging to the Somaiya campus. I am personally a student of both K J Somaiya Institute of Dharma Studies as well as K J Somaiya college of Arts and Commerce, Autonomous. The campus life is full of opportunities for students having an interest in literally any field. I would highly recommend students to join Somaiya campus especially if they are looking for non-academic pursuits along with academic growth.
