Government Engineering College M.Tech Review By Jignesh Baldaniya

Being a Computer Engineer student, I can’t give insight into the other branches but my branch had the best faculties. A government college is a government college after all and so there was no pressure of attending labs and classes. GECG though had the perfect infrastructure to battle Covid. The classes halted during the final semester and even the exams were delayed but all thanks to GTU as they found a way out and our course was completed successfully. Not just the attendance leverage was an advantage that you will have at Govt Engineering College Gandhinagar but the opportunities advantages were also a lot. One drawback is that it’s located at almost the end of the city and traveling from Ahmedabad daily was just not possible. The college does have a hostel but since the lectures were not compulsory I used to go to college max twice a week. We were given the yearly schedule well in advance and it may be Government College but the schedule would go as planned. Hence, I attended the important lab sessions and lectures that I knew I need clarity on. A large bulk assignment sheet is given and we can do that at our convenience but had to be submitted on time.

Look there are 2 ways to see things and many would say that the education system is worst as even though there were just a handful of students for M.E., still, people used to bunk, and college took no action. For those students I just have to say, why you can’t mind your own business. You come to college daily and study why bother the ones who can manage on their own. The students at GECG are passionate enough and most of them had clarity on which part of the academics needs fine-tuning and the college was always happy to take extra classes on that. Thus, I didn’t found any flaw with the kind of system that prevails at the college.

Patient was their biggest quality because every now and then the students go to them as per their convenience but they never lost their temper. I mean if I was in the same place and every next day some other student will come to me and ask the same things I will certainly lose it. They were patient enough and I have never seen them saying no to anybody. It’s the students who bunked the classes and faculties one can say that they didn’t cared but at least they will be on our side when needed so it’s unfair to demean them.

For placements, one has to register with Government Engineering College Gandhinagar placement cell from the beginning of the final year. They have a training program in place and again not compulsory so one can attend if he/she feels like. If one feels like they need some kind of help they can join that program. Many MNC’s have joined hands with the college and even though Covid striked before the placement week, we all are placed today and it’s because of the efforts of the college. Microsoft, Kasper, BYJU’s, and Redington India are the companies that took an online interview and we were formally called upon in October for a personal round of talks. It was more of a negotiation part as the companies have already made their mind to take us on board. Due to Covid, the average has come down a bit but the college campus placements are otherwise non questionable.

There are both boys and girls hostel and the fees is minimal. The yearly fees is some 10-12k and the kind of facilities that the hostel provides one will have to say that one can’t find a cheaper facility than that in Gandhi Nagar. Yes, the hostel was a bit messy but still at the price that the college has offered the hostel one has no right to complain. Students had to take care of their food part on their own and there were quite a few options in 1-2 km from the college.

There are 8 buildings in all and all the buildings have a number assigned to them. Our department building was number 5 and right next to that was the library which was building number 4. There are 3-4 small gardens inside the campus. The labs had a good set of computers and all connected to the server that had a Lan speed of 30-40 Mbps. The entire campus also was fully Wi-Fi and all the buildings have security cameras installed. The college canteen was average as I just had tea or coffee there because the one who has had food there already told me to dare if I try food from there.

I just went to college twice a week maximum. I didn’t enjoy my college life as I should have but on the days I spend at the campus, were breathtaking. Some students used to do their assignments and I came to the college to copy that and present it when my turn came. More than 80% of the students did the same as there were just 4-5 students who did the assignments. The events were not that big and GTU fest hardly saw students from GEC participating. Education part depends on the student’s ability as rest all facility are more or less the same that you will find in most of the colleges.
