Bhavan's College B.Com Review By Pawan Saboo

I joined during junior college, and because there was a massive mismatch between the education and co-curricular activities, I scored less in HSC, and I had to be stuck at Bhavans for graduation. In the name of lectures, there will be mass bunks. In the name of studies, there will be a dance competition preparation for 15th August. Thus, you can have anything at Bhavans but studies. Even though I wasn't that serious while I joined the junior college, after the time passed and I knew that mere graduation won't lead me anywhere in life, I realized that I made a huge mistake by joining this college. The peer colleges such as NM College and Mithibai College take graduation classes seriously, but at Bhavans no attendance issue. In the entire five years, I haven't even attended ten lectures in all. Even practicals I copied from someone and submitted. The irony was that I got more than him even after copying the entire assignment. The crowd was good in fact best among all the colleges between Borivali and Andheri. The campus is good, and students do bunk the lectures, but the campus was still full because there's no better time-pass during college hours than being a part of the lively campus of Bhavans college.

Pathetic is all I can say. Initially, I wasn't serious, but when I thought of becoming one, the college didn't allow me to. Lectures used to get cancelled every now and then. Sometimes even the lecture timings would change without prior notice. The faculty themselves asked us to invest time in developing some skills or prepare for higher studies as the college pass out from Bhavans are good for nothing in the market. At least they were right because having a graduation degree from Bhavans will only help us get a job as peon or clerk.

One can argue that maximum students were not serious, but the faculty were no different. In 8-10 lectures that I attended, I couldn't understand a word from what they taught. They just came in read what was there in the book. How is one supposed to understand by that. Well, this is not the faculty's headache but ours as a student. Most of the students have enrolled for tuition during college hours. I did the same as passing B.Com with 1st class would have helped my case in future studies.

Laughter is all I can have for this section. Placement for B.Com are slim in the top colleges of Mumbai, and Bhavans is nowhere in the rankings. Thus, even imagining that Bhavans can provide placement is a myth in itself. No companies visited the campus, nor does the college have any placement cell. There's a club in the name of placement, but they check what skill we have, and the only skill that I had was painting. For the skill I had, the club seniors told me that they don't have any such jobs, and like that, for all those who approached, they had some or the other excuses for not providing them jobs.

It is sad that even after knowing the reality of Bhavans, the college is no short of outsiders. The college should have taken pride in that and should have arranged accommodation facilities for those students. The college maybe doesn't think that way and therefore are far from the idea of having its own hostel. The college area has innumerable PGs and flats, and one doesn't have to look that far to find a good place to stay.

The infrastructure of Bhavans is good. First of all, the property prices in Mumbai are such that having a 40+ acres campus in Mumbai's soil is like a dream. In that context, Bhavans college is more significant than its peers. Bhavan's college library is one of the biggest, with a deity of Goddess Saraswati at the entrance. The college had recently built a 6-storey building, and so the total number of buildings at the campus stands at 4. The classroom's height is such that fans don't provide air to the students sitting beneath them. CCTV, as of now, is only on the ground floor of the academic block. The laboratories and all were shifted to the newly constructed building called Palanji Sadan. PG classes, labs, and recreation rooms have been built in the new block, and that is one fine reason for the students taking admissions here. One of the building, named Kulapati Sadan is where the college auditorium is placed, and along with that, there are six green rooms for the students. The campus has a temple of Lord Shiva, a post office, and a branch of the Indian Bank. BMCC owned ground next to the college is used by the college for sporting activities. The campus of Bhavans college is a mini-village that has almost all the facilities.

Talking about my graduation days, I didn't go to college except during exams after the 1st year. College's main fest K2 is also a no competition to south Mumbai colleges. If one seeks fun in their life, then Bhavans campus is ideal for them, but for the ones, who are serious about their studies, please stay away from Bhavans.
