Ramjas College B.Com Review By Nishant Mahajan

My first option was definitely not Ramjas College but I was happy with it because a few less percentage in 12th and I would have myself in lesser-known colleges. Ramjas is arguably the best after Hansraj in North Campus. Ramjas has one of the best faculties and probably the most supportive management. Students at Ramjas hold a lot of power and keeping good relationship with seniors is important here. There are enough societies and one thing that I can say about Ramjas is that they do their things quietly. You will always find university toppers from Ramjas but the management doesn’t believe in boasting. Students of Ramjas wins maximum trophies at the inter-college fests but still noise is made about the other colleges. Ramjas is like VVS Laxman of Indian cricket who believe in doing rather than talking. This is probably one of the best lessons that I learned from Ramjas. Work hard and achieve that much that your work will do the noise rather than throat. Most of the bachelor studies students were confused as studying in Delhi schools, all we learn is taking admission in DU and life will take care of every other thing after that. This is for sure not true as DU colleges and especially Ramjas will help you understand the life goals and will make you work hard towards them.

I know many people or my friends will not like it but, in DU colleges, studies are just for namesake. In Ramjas, even attendance is not compulsory. Most students went to tuitions for the last 3 months before the exams and score well enough to make sure pass the grad in first class. Ramjas college offers a complete package where studies are important but participating in events and learning at least one of the arts was like compulsory. You can skip all of that while in 1st year but once you become senior, you have to lead from the front as this is what our seniors and management taught us. Thus, academics at Ramjas is not just books but learning at least one of the art forms.

I found them cool as they would hardly interfere between the students. As far as I am concerned, I don’t think most of the professors even knew my name. It was the case with most of the students as you will only get noticed after you bring a trophy at the competitions. Faculty will help such students get extra attention and will also share the numbers to ask any doubts. At campus, they wouldn’t even care whether we have entered the class or are we catching up with the syllabus or not. A prelim before the finals was mandatory and students not doing well at the prelims didn’t get that one-month break before the finals as they have to attend college then and faculty helped out by making sure that such students at least get the passing marks.

Until few years back before I joined the placements were decent. Many PSUs have tie-up with the college but the percentage of students getting campus placements have dropped considerably. A job of 300-400k was on offer to some students. However, they don’t even comprise of 20% and therefore the placements can be called unhappy despairing.

Not many DU colleges have hostel facilities but Ramjas had both boys and girl’s hostels. It was for sheer outsiders and the students with Delhi’s domicile had no business in even seeing the hostel forms. The building was quite old but the students staying were happy both with room and the food provided.

Ramjas is quite old and the building needs renovation desperately. Classes weren’t turned modern by the time I passed out but things were changing slowly as CCTV cameras were installed and the new building of which construction was on must be done by now. The classes will shift over there and the main building will only have admin office and staff room. The college’s library is big and opened till 5 pm for day scholars. The hostellers can use that all day long but I am pretty sure no one would have done it. The computer lab was alongside library and also a small xerox shop was installed there. The college canteen is quite poor and luckily Hudson Lane and Kamala Nagar Market were nearby so that took care of this aspect. One word for Tom Uncle’s Maggie Point that has been serving Maggie for long is just at the corner of the college gate.

Delhi colleges and especially north campus colleges are trying to match fashion sense of South campus. You will see fashion galore as students of Ramjas believe that fashion is through them and they are not with fashion. Thus, fashionable would be the right word for the campus life of Ramjas College.
