Indian Institute of Technology Madras B.Tech Review By Aakash Rudra

It has been more than a year since I joined IIT Madras, where I am pursuing Mechanical Engineering. Recently, the NIRF rankings came out, and once again, we ranked number 1. This shows how well IIT Madras is performing, both academically and in many other aspects of college life. On the ground level, IIT Madras is indeed doing great in academics and beyond. However, there's a noticeable sense of competition for class studies. Here, you have access to everything you need, whether you want to start something new or learn on your own. But two things are too important, first one enthusiasm and second dedication. You will also notice a considerable distance between professors and students, which is quite different from the school experience. At IIT, you have to find your own path because everyone is focused on their future plans like placements, internships, etc. Its part of the college culture and tradition that almost everyone aims for a placement by the end of the fourth year, so most people follow the crowd in this regard. Even though I lived in a hostel for seven years before coming to IIT, this hostel life is amazing. There’s so much to enjoy, and you can do so many things. In the end, academics and CGPA matter, and you have to put in the hard work to succeed. I hope this gives you some insight into IIT Madras.

Eligibility and entry requirements to get into IIT and taking a branch is qualify the JEE Advanced and get the decent rank. After JOSAA counselling according to your rank, you will get into IIT with your preference branch. Many students think that only one can take Mechanical Engineering if their Physics particularly Mechanics part is strong. I enrolled in this branch because I was not able to get other high branches, but yes I thought of some positive things for this branch like you can in industry of country because mechanical engineering is everywhere. It is very important that you should take branch of your interest.

I have experienced some of the things like professors are good and they have huge knowledge. But I observed that very few students try to contact with professors. Methodology of every professor is slightly different. Some professors will come and start teaching on board. It makes their lecture boring. But yeah almost all professors will help to solve your doubt and query.

Absolutely, we have a placement cell which helps students to get placement not directly but indirectly. It is not possible for every student to get top company so it is also important that medium level company should come for placement.

In 1st year, generally freshers do live in Mandakini hostel which is one of the biggest and beautiful hostels of IIT Madras. I was there last year. My experience was awesome; I have many reasons like good roommates, cleanliness, anti-suicide net, a long corridor, and 24x7 electricity and water supply.

The college has done too much work on infrastructure and provides facilities for students. Recently New Academic block and one new building near ESB have been made. Recently alumni have donated free AC bus service to all student and all travelers in campus. In library, they have opened one extension hall for 24*7 study facility.

One of best time for which students will wait is fest like Saarang, Shaastra, Mechanica, Schroeter, Inter -IIT, etc. These are the main fest for which every student wait. Mainly you will see too much crowding during SAARANG and SHAASTRA because these are well known fests where students come and enjoy. Generally it happens in December ending and January starting. Scroeter is just inter-hostel tournament where you will internal crowding during sports.
