In MP, engineering is like something that everyone wants to do. If you throw a stone in the crowd, it will definitely hit an engineer as there are that many engineers. My parents, too, were against my decision to join an engineering college, but because it was in my city and SGSITS is the next big name after IIT Indore, and MANIT Bhopal they allowed me. The college accepts the state entrance as well as national level entrance scores. More than average score is enough to get admissions here as competition to get in, so not so tough. The college is relatively better than other private engineering colleges in Indore or state, as many noted alumni of SGSITS have been a part of this decorated institute. One such example is the former HPCL Chairman. Besides them, many are in prominent positions in many Indian and international companies.

If one thinks that studying engineering is easy, then they are probably right. One just can’t be casual in classes as I was regular with my classes and never had to join any tuition, which many students did. The passing ratio in engineering colleges is always questioned, but it is identical with arts or commerce. Passing percentage in universities is not more than 55-60% for any course. Yes, it is little less for engineering, but it’s because students take it too casually. The college was strict more than ever as attendance of less than 75% meant parents were called and were given a serious warning. There was just one warning if the same is repeated in the next semester, the students were not given their admit cards.

Faculty will groom you, but you will have to perform yourself at the end of the day. Some of them were too harsh to be honest, which made me lose interest in engineering. It was my fault, though as I let them dictate their terms. For some, blaming the entire faculty is not correct. Everywhere we will see such things happening. Some of the faculty were really nice, joined students in their fun, and encouraged students to get along with co-curricular activities.

Neither here nor there is all that I can say about the placements. If grades are not screwed and have management backing, you will surely end up getting placed. Bright students had more than one offers as well. Accenture and Infosys were the main companies, and almost all the students hired were offered a CTC of 4-5 LPA. In a sense, it is not bad because initial salaries hardly matter in engineering, but the organization you work for does. Around 60% of students recorded campus placement, and as per other engineering colleges of the state, the numbers are good.

Hostel was nice and there were both boys and girls hostel of the college within the campus. The hostels were small, and your rank determined whether you would be given seats in the hostel or not. Hostels were reasonable or can say were cheaper than staying out. Since I didn’t stay at the hostel, I am not aware of the life at the hostel. All I heard was that rooms were not that clean and also the food at the mess was average. One can’t expect clean and friendly rooms and home-cooked food in the hostel. So, one has to adjust a bit because it didn’t look that bad from hindsight. I had friends who stayed at the hostel for all four years but still kept complaining about one thing or the other.

The college location is one of the primes, and for outsiders, it was a paradise as the city’s main bus stand and railway station were close. There’s one canteen, and that was good. The campus is bigger than many colleges and has hostels and a medical team available 24x7. The college doesn’t have any transport facility and students have to reach the college independently. The computing facilities were excellent, and so was the college library. The college has around 20 sporting facilities inside the campus. From Volleyball to Football and Tennis to Carrom, there are almost all the sports facilities inside the campus.

There were not many great things because college used to have an annual fest. The fest was politics as the same people performed in all four years. In the name of club’s people find ways to bunk classes and go to the movies. One serious event or competition that the college organized was the annual sports meet, Varchasva. There are 20 points up for grabs and is played between students of various departments. Girls carried eight of those points, so everyone was kept in the loop.
