St. Joseph's Institute of Management PGDM Review By Supratim Deb

SJIM is one of the top management schools of the country. Everyone knows that getting here requires big numbers and nice presentation of oneself at the GD & PI rounds. So, if all goes well, one can be a part of this decorated institute which is second to IIM in Bangalore. How to bring out the best in one is what SJIM is good at. Karnataka is a rural state and rather than taking us on expensive foreign trips, SJIM took us to rural India and experience the problem that rural India is facing. So, SJIM don’t just make management students but students who are well aware of their social responsibilities. Just after joining the college, the college’s first fest of the year, Pinnacle is organized. The fest was more about relaxing the nerves and getting used to living a stressed life. The colleges organize many team bonding and team building sessions. Entertainment things aren’t far behind as the college gives enough opportunity to show the other sides of you.

Academics were monotonous because attendance was like the utmost thing here. We were provided exposure and a lot spotlight was thrown outside academics. However, if you love to be in the spotlight then make sure study your best. Everything related to academics is being closely monitored. You will have to take care of this part as rest all things will be taken care by the college. All the semesters had a hell lot of subjects and studies at times may look like dull but as a student one had absolutely no choice but to go on with it.

Touchwood, I have always had really good relations with my faculty right from my school days. The faculty of SIJM was like Virat Kohli of Indian cricket during its prime. You will get nothing but the best out of them. If they have a slightest of idea that a student is losing momentum of finding the going tough, they will themselves approach the student and give them a befitting counseling. PGDM is a challenging course and many might not know but the ratio of students quitting in between is quite high. Thus, faculty’s role becomes even more important and they have been playing their role with full honesty.

Once you have done PGDM from here means you can leave behind all your worries about the placements. In due course of time the placements have become the best as a banking job was my dream, and I got the opportunity to present myself in front of four top banks. Since, it’s Bangalore, IT companies can’t keep their eyes of such a reputed institute and they were the second largest recruiters after the banking sector. The placement cell took a complete note of students getting placed and at the end we got to know that 90% of our batch got directly placed through campus. All this happened months before, we cleared our final trimester. This is the beauty of doing PGDM from a top college as you just have to study hard and rest all things keep falling in place automatically.

Earlier the hostel was inside the campus but due to major increase in the number of students, they have adopted a boy’s hostel at some distance from the institute. The girl’s hostel is inside the campus and is little strict than the boy’s hostel. The boy’s hostel was great as it served all kind of foods. Even the hostel campus had a separate library, relaxation areas, and most importantly free from the honking. Bangalore is equally crowded as Kolkata but at least after certain hours, one can breathe easy. So, at hostels I was able to breathe easy as all students demand such as good food and clean rooms were provided by the college.

Campus of St. Joseph is little tough to figure out. If I mention about the facilities of the campus there was a computer lab which was used for doing all the projects. The entire campus was Wi-Fi with a speed beyond words. The playing area were less as there were two basketball courts as one was for boys and the other one was reserved for girls. The SIJM building had the library at the top floor and a small but canteen close to the main building. Infrastructure was neither here nor there because facilities wise it was sufficient but as they say the wants are unlimited.

Sports are an integral part of the college as all students were bound to play one sport or the other. Legendary cricketer Anil Kumble was invited for one guest lecture and he himself is an engineer, so he shared his thoughts on sports can help in studies as well. Life was balanced at St. Joseph as I did miss home on certain occasions but the college has made it up on most of the time.
