MCT's Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Technology M.Tech Review By Arth Garg

On the back of some explosive placements that Rajiv Gandhi Institute Of Technology Mumbai has had in the last few years and my brother already being passed out from here, it was an obvious choice for me to come here because I was done with small cities and their fake universities. Mumbai, the land of opportunities, has built a college named RGIT which may not be as good as IIT Bombay but is no less either. I skipped checking all the colleges in Bhopal or MP and looked down straight to the west where there are colleges galore. MIT Pune, DJ Sanghvi in Mumbai, and others were in my list but RGIT was clearly above them and my score permitted me to be here then why not. I think I was right in making this decision because lockdown was imposed, we had our finals delayed by 2 months but who cares when we all had the best set of placements even in the trying times. RGIT is one of the best engineering colleges in Mumbai or rather western India because trust me when I say this, I checked around 50 colleges and even been to around 20 campuses but RGIT stood way above them in all the parameters.

You can’t start from scratch here because what’s been taught in Mumbai engineering colleges, they take it on from there. For students like us who literally knew nothing, were given extra help and assistance. Our previous outings were nullified as after classes we were asked to wait and the designated persons cleared all our basics in the first month itself. The only college to look for education while pursuing masters in engineering is RGIT. My friends went to other colleges and they dropped out in between as they said everything was going way above their head.

One thing to look out for RGIT is its faculties. My previous college faculties didn’t know elementary things and couldn’t speak anything in English but here it was the reverse of that. All were experts in their subjects and Hindi was non-existent for them. I felt so embarrassed as I wasn’t so good at it but the faculties made it clear that no one will laugh if one struggles to ask his/her questions in English. Their confidence and help from my classmates helped me improve my language skills. I can Google as many adjectives one wants but trust me even they won’t be enough to describe how good the faculties of RGIT were.

Aptitude tests have now become mandatory and in interviews only the soft skills are checked. All the master’s students went for training for a month and we were made to prepare for aptitude tests for placements. All those who cleared it became eligible for placements. Unfortunately, the placements just began when Covid struck and everything came to a standstill. The college though ensured us that once these trying times are over, the college will help us get placed. Accenture’s office was close to our college and that is where I went for an internship. The exams finally held in August and since placements here are a meaty thing and college is a butcher, how can they miss cutting it.

Sadly, most colleges in Mumbai don't have an area to accommodate a hostel and plus the cost of living is so high that literally one needs to have a very deep pocket to study here. The college was close to Juhu and a 2BHK Flat cost us 60k where the three of us used to stay. So, not having a hostel is a disadvantage but college couldn’t do anything about it.

All the labs were on the 1st floor and classes from 2nd floor onwards. The ground floor had a canteen which was of no use as close to the college was Versova Beach. Besides the location and college building, there was nothing great about the infrastructure. There was no playground, just a basketball court. The major part of the building is occupied by the classes, library, auditorium, and two seminar halls. The central workshop is in the basement and CS students hardly used that as we had all our practicals and workshops in the computer labs or the seminar halls. So, that sums up the summary as infrastructure literally ends here because there’s nothing else which I can mention.

Mumbai and its fests are super amazing. RGIT’s fest is not comparable to other colleges of Mumbai like even if I rule out Moodindigo, fests of colleges like Mithibai, NM, and HR are considered way above the fests of RGIT. For me though, I have never seen such fests where Bollywood celebrities are invited and many red-carpet events are organized for entertainment. Be it UG or PG, all the students were asked to participate in both tech fest and cultural fests of the college.
