Institute of Marketing and Management PGDM Review By Ganesh Sharma

After UG, PGDM became more of a compulsory thing because back home, the family business needed me and I was still not done with my college life. I wanted more of it and I seriously worked hard for it too. I came to the college scoring really well in MAT and thereby carried a lot of dreams, ambitions, and aspirations. Institute of Marketing and Management New Delhi is not the kind of institute that has sole focus on studies but they make students skilled so that the students can grow at a personal level. The schedule of IMM though was quite rigorous as meeting industry stalwarts and taking some leaf out of their books was some of the best opportunities presented to us. We didn’t stay at the four walls as we did things to cross those walls of our life at IMM. In short, IMM provided us with the best understanding of the business world and how corporations run their companies to grow exponentially every year.

These days industry demands are high as they need students that are skilled both technically and commercially. For marketing students, a mandatory social internship program was there. In this program, we had to connect with random people as this was the beauty of the task. If we couldn’t socialize, there’s no way, we can learn marketing. So, a lot of effort and time has to be spared off campus to learn the things that were required for our course. The college carries a 5-decade-long legacy and therefore no freebies were served here. The college’s placement was questioned when I joined and therefore the college took the extra measure in making the students skilled. The college had a bouquet of many courses but in all the courses students had to do a few skill development classes together on topics like Public speaking, TQP, and entrepreneurship.

Faculties were quite happy that there were not many extra-curricular activities and just a few dead club activities. Sometimes they politely gave us some extra work and sometimes not so politely because the work has to be done at any cost. It did feel like we are being under the shadow of some school teachers but obviously had no choice but to obey all their commands. The faculties taught us one thing which they were quite sure that it can’t be taught and that is a natural instinct. All of us are not blessed with such quality but hard work can certainly develop that. Faculties were definitely one of the most credible sources to learn at the institute.

FMCG and auto companies were the ones who were more interested in marketing students. Companies like Parle Agro, HUL, Hyundai, Maruti, and TVS Motors were some of the top recruiters during our batch. Banks were also there but I was least interested in banking jobs. I chose one of the previously mentioned companies with a package less than I dreamt of but getting into such companies itself is a challenge. The average of placements was down simply because around 80% of students were placed. 80 is also a great number when it comes to placements of PGDM because not many colleges have that percentage.

IMM has made a tie-up with a hostel close to the college which is operated by IMM and is therefore known as IMM hostels. Both boys' and girls’ hostel are in the same sort of society or locality and is therefore even called a Unisex hostel. However, the buildings are different and one can avail hostel facilities if they belong outside Delhi-NCR. The hostel used to serve breakfast and dinner as the hostel students were allowed to have their lunches at the college’s café. This served as a huge advantage for them because otherwise getting into the café was quite tough as it was always full.

The college building was great but apart from that, there was literally nothing there. The digital library helped us get the books in digital form as carrying books and then paying a fine for losing them has been a hassle throughout my life. The entire college building was air-conditioned and during winters the temperatures were kept moderate. The labs and classrooms of the college were hi-tech, and there were two student lounges as the café was small and one was considered lucky if they can get space there. I knew I wasn’t that lucky and therefore was happy spending my free time at lounges which were made airport styled.

The college fees are comparatively low and they also provide a lot of scholarships depending on the scores that you have throughout your academic career. There were many events that happened inside the campus but we were also taken on some cultural and camping trips by the college. One can enjoy a good campus life but the spare time was quite minimum as studies ruled all throughout.
