Maitreyi College B.Com Review By Deepa Bhatt

I will mention the drawbacks first because advantages are plenty. It’s an all girl’s college which is a bit of disadvantage. Maitreyi College is in Chanakyapuri and therefore we had to walk at least a km or 2 to get an auto. The nearest bus stop too is a km away because there are no bus stops or auto stands close to the college. It was the Palestine Embassy that was next to our college. The college closest to our campus was Sri Venkateswara College. The two of the student’s hotspots Satya Niketan and Anand Niketan were also quite close to the college as for outsiders they have to find PGs there because close to the college there aren’t any. Infrastructure is good as the gardens and all are indeed the best among DU colleges but from inside a lot of renovation needs to be done. So, overall, a good college as the college is ranked among top 15 colleges of DU.

The college is indeed known for its arts faculty but commerce was not bad either. The semester system was introduced during our time and we were the second batch to get enrolled in the semester styled B. Com program. Earlier it used to be one midterm and one annual exam. The annual exams too at that point were one and a half months long which after the introduction of semester system the times has been cut-short and trust me its better this way. Well academically the college wasn’t that rigorous but since the affiliation is with DU, one can’t escape the books at all. One night stand doesn’t work anymore as those are the things of the past. The change was for good and it has continued because this style of studies has worked.

Notable alumni from Maitreyi have been a result of notable faculties that Maitreyi College has. One think that they drenched doing was grabbing the students and making them do unwanted things. This is indeed a common practice in DU colleges but luckily Maitreyi faculties were kind enough to go rub shoulders with students and stand with them in tough times. The faculties were alluded of some powers as the top management always kept a check on them. So, the faculties had to be a little more careful while handling the students.

Well back in the days, placements were hardly done as insurance companies and some psu sector companies like NOCIL, BHEL, NTPC, and from insurance sector companies like Reliance Insurance, Future General Insurance and others have come for placements. A salary between 10 to 15k was offered during those days and that left with single choice of pursuing MBA. Started my classes during the final year as a good job without a dual degree was inevitable. After not getting placed the feeling can never be good but nothing could have been done as the jobs were not that high then.

The college is huge but still the college doesn’t have any hostel facility. Satya Niketan and Anand Niketan were around 2kms from the college and there are adequate boys and girls PGs over there. The rent is little high there because the number of students coming to Delhi is high and Anand Niketan is always in demands as it is close to various colleges.

From outer the college shows glimpses of that it’s an all-girls college. The orange colored building has some graffiti’s on its walls. The building is surrounded by gardens from all four sides. So, it looks like an island surrounded not by sea but with flowers as our gardens had fresh flowers blossoming every single day. Though we were not allowed to pluck them but still everyone did. Just right to the main block there was a two floor library and though I never read newspapers at home, at college library I used to read it whenever I went to library. We had students from all states of India and keeping that in mind, our library also subscribed to newspapers of over 10 languages for sure. The garden adjacent to the library was our sports ground in a way as there was volleyball net and much outdoor equipment were available at the college store room. Having said that hardly any of that was used as girls were more worried about getting tanned.

Well, if anyone thinks that girls can’t have fun without boys then their premonition is as wring as anything. The campus was secured and since the college was at one of the most secured areas of Delhi, the security issue never crossed our mind. The college events were pretty average apart from the annual event “Rhapsody” which invited many prominent personalities of the country. It was an average campus life but still I hardly missed the college all three years.
