Bikaner Technical University B.Tech Review By Harender Singh

BTU formerly known as University College of Engineering and Technology is a government college and one of the best in Rajasthan. When I joined the college, the name of the college was that but in 2017, it was changed to Bikaner Technical University. The admissions are based on the score of JEE and then we have to fill REAP form. Post that counseling is done and seats are allotted. BTU was my first choice as I engineering from a government college has its own value even if it doesn’t provide placements. The college’s infrastructure is great as there are around 20 labs for mechanical department. Just one section was there was mechanical branch with 44 students as maximum students were in CS and CIVIL branches. Since my father has an engineering unit, it was inevitable for me to go for mechanical engineering. The other colleges that I was targeting were MBM Engineering College in Jodhpur, Maharana Pratap University in Udaipur, and others. However, since my family put in Napasar and Bikaner being the closest to my place, BTU stayed my first choice and I was happy to get admissions here.

The engineering course has eight semesters and, in each semester, we learned a lot of new stuffs. After the end of 6th semester, we were sent for training and also projects were allotted for training. So, nothing here was just for the sake of doing it as the college meant every bit of it. The final two semesters were even stronger as from the 7th semester our training started and companies like ONGC and Cairn Indian came themselves to the college to train us. Some students impressed them so well, that they were hired just after the training. So, one can imagine how strong the academics were of BTU. Bikaner is a small town at the end of the day and college is also not so great which can be compared to colleges of Mumbai, Delhi, Pune, or Bangalore but whatever it have I just loved it and I am glad that at least for UG I chose this college.

Half the faculties were from Bikaner and half the faculties came through Tequip. So, the faculties that came through Tequip were from cities like Thiruvananthapuram, Kochi, and Bangalore. So, we had world-class faculties at our fore who developed a lot of skills in us. They made us do a lot of practicals as they were clear that as a mechanical engineer, we have to smell the machines to love them. Even some of our classes were organized at CNC lab.

Placements are a little poor here that even though there were so less students, we had no choice but to wait for our chances because ONGN and Cairn India were the only two big names. Some small names came through the ranks but a salary of 15k after engineering is something I couldn’t take. In fact, none took such petty jobs. Unfortunately, some of us then decided to pursue higher studies as those who seriously wanted jobs had no choice but to go for higher studies.

The hostels are inside the campus and there are six boys inside the campus. The girls hostel is around 4-5kms from the campus. The hostels are good but since they are government hostels the facilities were not that great. The new hostel buildings were getting ready then and now the hostels are better than any private hostels. Around 700-800 students stay in each hostel and each hostel has its own mess. For non-vegetarians, though things may look bitter because only vegetarian food is served in the mess.

BTU campus two colleges inside the campus. One is Engineering College Bikaner and the other one is University College of Engineering and Technology which has now changed to Bikaner Technical University. The campus has five canteens and even though engineering college Bikaner has been given a larger area, our area was sufficient for having five canteens, around 15 labs for the mechanical department, and seven to eight departmental buildings. There are five playgrounds but one can’t expect grass on them as it is Rajasthan. The badminton courts are at indoor sporting facilities and there are two wooden Badminton courts for us to have a ball at the courts.

Even though it’s Bikaner but events are numerous. One of the biggest technical fests named Abhivyakti is held in April every year and the annual cultural event of Resonanza is organized in December. One would never get the feeling that it’s Bikaner as the event goes on till 11 pm and even girl crowd which is indeed less but stay at the campus during the cultural event. So, it’s fun alongside studies at BTU because I just thought I will be stuck with my books but what happened there was something I never imagined.
