IIT Hyderabad: Placement Success Stories

IIT Hyderabad is among the top engineering institutes of the country. It ranks 8th at NIRF and has a great image in the field of research and technology. I got my admission into this institute after I cleared the JEE Advanced 2023 examination. I got into JoSAA admission counseling process. Finally, in August 2023, I joined IIT Hyderabad. It has been a year and a half being in this institute and until now, my experience has been pretty well and satisfactory. I was amazed by the infrastructure. The campus provides great hostels with comfortable rooms and amenities for all its students. The sports and cultural complex is well equipped with multiple sports facilities. The professors are very well supportive. Many events keep happening in the campus, making the campus life exciting. The reason I chose this campus is that Hyderabad being a booming IT hub, gives me multiple opportunities for my future endeavors. Moreover, Hyderabad is closer to Mumbai, which is my hometown.

I have chosen a Bachelor's in Technology in the Civil Engineering Department. This is a 4-year course with no prerequisites. I chose Civil engineering because I did not have much options according to my JEE rank. I did not want to join Chemical, Biotechnology, or Metallurgical Departments nor did I want to give up this institute. Therefore, Civil Engineering was the best choice for me. It required a JEE advanced rank of around 7k in 2023. Then, later, during the JoSAA counseling, I got this institute and department during Round 2. Civil Engineering is a comfortable department, not very much hectic. It gives you time to develop extra skills, or develop a hobby, etc. The exam frequency depends completely on the professor. Generally, it involves a mid-term exam, an end-term exam, assignments, and a couple of surprise quizzes. To be honest, I don't know how much academics prepare me for real life challenges, but rather it gives me lessons really important in life.

The fee for my course is around 1.45 Lakh per semester, which is around 2.9 LPA. Tuition fee are 1 Lakh, and Hostel & mess fee is around Rs. 31,000. The rest comprises of Insurance, and other sports, library, hospital charges. At the time of admission, you have to pay Rs. 40,000 in advance during the JoSAA counseling, which is late deducted from the 1st-semester fee amount. There are many scholarships and fee discounts for SC/ST/PWD students. They don't have to pay the tuition fee. It is easier for them to apply for scholarships than for students belonging to the general category. Students from general category barely get scholarship benefits.

The faculty is excellent. They are PhD holders in their respective fields. Many professors use blackboards and PPTs to teach their course. Some encourage group discussions for projects. They can be mailed any time and hence are easily approachable. Some are very friendly and can be approached not only for academic issues but also for any advice. They also help students who are willing to do projects under their guidance.

The placement cell in my institute is under the office of Career Services. It brings companies for placements and internships. There are many companies that come for various roles like- Software developer, Business Analyst, Product manager, roles in AI/ML and even core job position. Some famous companies that visit the campus for placements are Google, Amazon, Upriver, Nvidia, PayTm, Ola, Groww, Leap, McKinney, Goldman Sachs, Thomson Reuters, NPCI, Kotak Mahindra bank, Axis Bank, etc. The highest package was around 60 LPA this year and the average lays around 20 LPA.

The hostels are great. They are better than any other IIT has. We have single rooms from 2nd year and double occupancy rooms for first year students. There is a washing machine on every floor, a water filter on every alternate floor, radiant cooling system in the hostels, which help us cope with the intense Hyderabad summers. There are also vending machines installed in some hostels. There are also some eating outlets near the hostel areas. Boys and girls have separate hostels. There is no in and out timing for hostels. The fee is around Rs. 15,000 per semester. The mess food is also quite satisfactory. The quality is good, but the menu is quite boring. They provide us with breakfast, lunch, and dinner. There is also tea and snacks during the evening but the snacks are paid. There are also recreational rooms in the hostel areas.

The campus has great infrastructure. It has academic blocks for almost every department. they are huge building with unique designs. There is a lecture hall complex with multiple lecture halls with varying capacity, from 50 to 800 capacity rooms. The library is also huge with study rooms, AV rooms, Group discussion rooms, and it also has books from almost every field- from art, drama, mythology to finance. The auditorium is not very big with a capacity of around 300 people. The campus is located far away (60kms) from the mail city making the city inaccessible. The campus also has Faculty towers, a supermarket, a hospital, a convention centre, an internal bus service running from 7am to 11.30pm, and a van running in the nighttime. My favorite part of the campus is the civil block which has the most beautiful design and also a café for me to hang out or sip a cup of coffee between the lectures.

The campus life overall is pretty good. The institute crowd is majorly from the Telangana or Andhra Pradesh state. The institute has multiple clubs for entrepreneurship, finance, consulting, technical clubs, dance, drama, music, art, literature, etc. I have been a part of the entrepreneurship club, finance and consulting club, and TEDx IIT Hyderabad. The extracurricular activities may include inter hostel competitions; help once a year, which comprises of sports, cultural and tech competitions. Similarly, we have interred departmental competitions. The annual cultural and tech fest of IITH happens in February, named ‘Elan’ and ‘nVision’. These fests, along with my friends, make my campus life great.
