SRM University Vadapalani BBA Review By Sriya Bhagawati

There are some steep rules at SRM University Vadapalani but trust me they were hardly followed. I will mention some of the harsh rules that boys had to face. They are not allowed to wear round neck t-shirts and have always have to wear I-Cards. Now suppose if these steep rules are there for the boys then what rules the college has laid for girls. Trust me but it’s beyond words. So, in short one has to sacrifice a lot as the college life doesn’t look like a college life over here. There’s nothing called X-factor at the college as if I chuck the infrastructure the rest all parts are average including the placements which is highly talked about part of the SRM University. So, SRM Vadapalani Campus means no joy but to come to the college and have live by the rules that the university has put forth both for boys and girls. I am sorry to point out such points as many might feel them needless but in my books one can’t come to college living life that has lived for last 14-15 years. I am talking about school life as the college life here was no different.

We tend to use the word manage when it comes to academics and trust me academics here was just managed as there were no flashy signals about it. Education here was treated like kids gloves or rather education here was wrapped in cotton wool as the college has laid the restrictions but BBA just looked a simple course where not much to be done as in the name of practicals we were given case studies and we had to solve them one or two per semesters. So, the whole debate about education depends on the course that one chooses. I chose a course which was lesser fancy because unlike medical and engineering students we just had to spend four hours at the college and we could wrap up post that.

On a regular basis they did same things over and again. One chapter finished and they will put a class for doubts in which jokes and comments were passed rather than doubts. The story repeated for all three years and I wish slightly more helpful conditions might have helped them. Guest lectures or industrial tours where they could have felt students opening up more was hardly done. I have done MBA and I know for the matter of fact that every top BBA college in India does that. If SRM claims to be one of those, they will have to introduce such things in their curriculum otherwise faculty’s role will not be defined.

To be fair with the university, they have nice tie-ups and industrial connect so companies do come over before the beginning of the final semester exams. If one is lucky enough, they might have a job in hand worth 3-4 lakhs even after a mediocre course like BBA. For people from Chennai the job is acceptable but the outsiders can’t take such jobs as the cost of living in Chennai is such that in that kind of cash, it’s more like juggling with life then enjoying the job.

The girls’ hostel are not inside the campus and rather too far for anyone likes. SRM University Vadapalani hostel buildings for girls are good and so are the facilities as it was a new hostel back then and SRM is known for providing the best set of facilities to their students. The fees was slightly higher but in against the kind of facilities that the university hostel provides were worth it. Air-conditioned rooms, attached washrooms and a hygienic canteen or the mess that served good food to the students.

Unlike other SRM campuses, this campus is quite small as few lavish buildings a small playground and a huge parking space and we are done with the area part of the Vadapalani campus. The computer labs and the discussion lab were great though small but were great. The canteen was nice filler as even though it’s SRM one can get Masala Dosa at 60 bucks which is nearly impossible to get in Chennai if you go to cafes. So, given what we had in terms if infrastructure, I would say just satisfying.

SRM University Vadapalani Campus wasn’t that happening and therefore on guest lectures, or other events, we along with our friends found Rahat Plaza and Forum malls more interesting. They were close to the university and during off-time living life beyond campus seemed more exciting. If rules were a little moderate the students can enjoy here as the number of students in this campus is few and one can be a part of clubs and cultural activities which will help student to recharge themselves after the studies.
