Panjab University was once known as icon and symbol of academic excellence. It is indeed now a political madrassa. I am sorry for using such words but it is true as those who want to start their journey in politics take admissions here. Spoiled, rich brats are a part of the PU Chandigarh where students coming from average family like us stand no chance. Selfish agendas are turned into political agenda here and what we get is free lectures because if any such rift was going on the lectures were cancelled first hand. I wish the university knew that there are several election bodies and they all fight election with non-violence but not at Panjab University Chandigarh. Every single day, I used to hear about new fights and new nuisance being created. I am glad that I chose B.Com to study from here because any other course and I know I would have flunked. So, coming to the positive, it is one of the best places, if you want to pursue higher studies because the university is not at all rigorous when it comes to attendance. Thus, one gets all the time in the world to prepare for CAT or other competitive exams.
Attendance was never an issue here as students used to come and sit in the garden rather than going in the classes. The university is such that shootings took place often and we were more inclined towards it then the lectures. Fights and elections of the university was more interesting than the lectures. Classes remained barren for most part of the year as out of a class of 120 only 20 were regular. The exams though were strict as the schedule was followed and even the results were declared within a month.
Faculties were not from political background but knew politics really well. It means that the politics was not played among the students but among the faculties and management too. They only told us that college life never comes back so do all that you want but keep a balance between enjoyment and other things. They told as they could have some free time because they were happier when the lectures got cancelled. The number of faculties were high and therefore the faculty to student ratio was never a problem but the only problem was that none of them were serious. Students were happy not going for lectures while the faculties were happy when due to circumstances that were created the lectures got cancelled.
I was a part of the college during Covid year and university had all the excuses or everything in the world for saying that the university couldn’t do anything about the circumstances that were created. Even if Covid hasn’t arrived, the scene would have been the same because Panjab University is known for placements but not for B. Com department. Most of the students came from wealthy business background and were happy to just take back home their degrees while some who dearly cared for placements had to go for higher studies.
The hostels of the university were great because nowhere else on earth I have seen hostels that has a rule with no timings. One of the hostels had curfew times while for students who wanted to do part time jobs or engaged with other things can opt for the open hostel in which students were free to come and go on their own terms. It might be the case but the hostels were guarded with guards because no matter how many fights or anything happened at the campus, it certainly stayed away from the hostels as nobody could have dared to be an intruder at Panjab University hostels.
The Panjab University has two campuses and our department was in the Sector 14. Our campus had around 12 hostels, and three play grounds. The open air theatre that was kept occupied by all the singers of the university or the lovers who wanted to propose on daily basis was the most entertaining area of the campus. Every time you get bored, you go there and you will die laughing. There were plenty of canteens and some of them cheaper than the most. There were multiple auditoriums and around 5-6 gardens. Sporting facilities are unmatched because besides playground there was a large swimming pool and students were allowed to use that.
A lot of Punjabi singers have passed out from Panjab University so one thing for sure that the university is no short in talent. Bollywood actress Yami Gautam too has studied here so for those who want to pursue a career in entertainment industry, there’s no better place than Panjab University. So, for students who are interested in Politics and entertainment business Panjab University can serve as the place for giving the best auditions.
After completing my graduation in engineering from GNA University, MBA seemed more promising to me. I applied for various entrances of premier University but it was PU where I got the admission. I wanted to get out of the state to experience something new. PU though never let me feel that I should have left my state because it was no less than an international experience. Yes, the crowd was 90% from the state itself but still all from well-cultured families and sound backgrounds. I came to Chand... Read Full Review
