Affordable Fees and Scholarships at COMJNMH Kalyani

College of Medicine & JNM Hospital Kalyani is a Nice place for academics, skill development and sports. Lots of cases for clinical exposure. I chose this college based on its proximity to Kolkata and the hostel rooms which are quite spacious and newly made. This place has a large campus area with library, labs, etc. Food is cheap and tasty. There’s no hustle and bustle of the city. The place is close to Mayapur which is loved by students.

MBBS is a purely professional course requiring students to apply their knowledge in the field. Learning has no end. This program teaches giving back to the community. Qualifying NEET exam allows you to appear for your choice filling on the WBUHS website. Each semester has various exams depending on academic year. There are 2 semester exams and one semester end exam. Admission is fairly simple and is conducted by the state government on the specific dates. Whatever we learn definitely helps us in the wards and daily life in treatment of patients as well as family and friends. Document verification, submission of fees, hard copy of mark sheet, etc. are required for admission.

Per semester fees is Rs. 5100/- at College of Medicine & JNM Hospital Kalyani. Rs. 4,600 semester fees & Rs. 600 hostel fees for 6 months i.e. one semester. Caution fee is Rs. 2,000/- which is refundable. There are many state sponsored scholarships for state quota students. Separate scholarships for Muslim and minority group students are provided. Library fee is separate. All of this is paid before leaving the college or else it would be deducted from the internship salary. All fees have to be paid by an online portal and no cash is accepted. Merit based scholarships are also available for all students who are economically challenged.

Faculty members at College of Medicine & JNM Hospital Kalyani are professionals who are practicing physicians and are great doctors. They are very friendly and they provide us all the knowledge required for our profession. Teaching is via white boards, PPT’s and oral lectures. There are 125 students in a batch and every professor is reachable and cooperative. There are lab technicians and allied health subject professionals for any other help required. Practical are present for every subject in our course.

There is no placement provision in College of Medicine & JNM Hospital Kalyani. Everyone has to complete a mandatory paid internship lasting a year in the hospital after which you’re given your degree. 70 students are offered house staffship in the hospital after their internship on the basis of their marks or distinctions in subjects they achieved which is also paid. Though housestaffship can be done at any college of one’s choice subject to seat availability. Internship stipend is Rs. 28,800/- per month.

College of Medicine & JNM Hospital Kalyani has one junior boys hostel, one senior boys hostel, a girls hostel, intern hostel and DNB hostel. Junior boy’s hostel has rooms for two, senior boy’s hostel has only single rooms, girl’s hostel has both double and triple person rooms. Intern hostel also has single rooms. No wardens, mediocre security, cheap and tasty food, hygiene might be a subjective matter for many. Hostel fees is Rs. 100/- per month. There are no rules regarding entry or exit for boys but girls are restricted to go out after 11 pm. Mosquitoes are a major problem. No drinking water supply in the hostels. Water has to be bought from the canteens in packaged 20 L drums. Hostel food is available till 11-11:30 pm.

The academic block at College of Medicine & JNM Hospital Kalyani has vide number of departments like anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, FMT, pharmacology, microbiology, pathology, and community medicine. There are labs in each department. There are 4 large capacity lecture theatres too with AC. There’s a two storied AC library as well. Lecture theatre cum seminar hall is present in the hospital building. There are no student groups, no sports team except for football. There is also a large auditorium with the highest seating capacity in any state medical college. Rest of the labs and departments are present in the hospital building.

Campus life is average. There is not much to do. No fests or events are organized anymore here. Just an inter batch football tournament is organized. College crowd is average. My experience has been pretty good but I don’t expect it to get any better. Good place overall, but don’t get your expectations too high.
