JOSAA counseling for admission in B.Tech at IIT Indore

By hearing the name IIT, people generally think of nerds. But there is much more to it at IITs. Students here are very enthusiastic to learn new things. I feel very peaceful since I am surrounded by people who support me. The main reason why I chose IIT Indore was because of the new branch that was offered here. They give so much more space to explore the non-core branches and other activities taking place on-campus. Also, the Institute is highly reputed when it comes to research work. The one thing that I love about this Institute is that there is no night curfew. We can go and come at any time to our hostels.

I have chosen B.Tech in Space Science and Engineering which is a very new branch but I really wanted to make my career in Space Science so it works quite well for me. To be eligible to apply for this course, you have to first clear JEE Main and then JEE Advanced with a rank of around 6000 to 7000 if you are a general category student. Once you are eligible then you have to apply through JOSAA (Joint Seat Allocation Authority) counseling. Then talking about the frequency of exams, there are mainly mid-semester and end-semester exams and in between students are assigned with various quizzes, assignments, projects, etc. Mid-semesters and end-semesters occur at specific timings but professors can take quizzes anytime (there could be surprise quizzes also). Sometimes it can be very hectic for students (speaking from personal experience). There can be classes up to 6:30 PM and then 8 quizzes held in a week. It is daunting to handle according to me. Academics consist of mostly theoretical part.

The fee per semester is around Rs. 1,40,000/- including tuition fees, hostel, mess and other things (if you are a general category student). The fee is less for category students like SC, ST, PWD, OBC, etc. Also, there are many scholarships for students whose family income is less than Rs. 5,00,000/-.

There are total 13 faculties in our department who are mostly graduated in fields related to Physics, Electronics And Astronomy. The method of teaching depends on them, some of them use PPTs, and some uses blackboards. Most of them are good at teaching things and solving problems in less time. The student-teacher ratio is good too. The bonding between faculty and students is great too; most of them are very helpful and approachable.

There is Training and Placement cell (TPC) in our Institute with which I am a little disappointed. There are opportunities for top branches like Computer Science but branches like ours has very less opportunities because they are not many companies coming to campus. So, it is very difficult for us. TPC usually tries to bring companies by contacting HRs. Most frequent companies include Google, Goldman Sachs, BNY, Samsung, etc. I am in third year of my course right now so I do not have relevant experience.

At IIT Indore, hostels are separate for girls and boys. They are all well-furnished with modern facilities. Single rooms are allotted from third year based on the choice of students. The infrastructure is also nice. Recreational activities include Badminton court inside the hostels, common rooms having TV, gym equipment, Table Tennis, Carrom, etc. which contribute to the overall hostel experience at the Institute. The hostel rules are not strict. We just have to write our name in register whenever we go out.

The overall infrastructure is very nice and beautiful. The buildings include admin block, lecture hall complex, a beautiful auditorium, sports complex, hostels, and labs. The size of campus is around 500 acres including the faculty buildings. My favorite thing about the campus is its lake which is in front of admin building. Whenever I feel sad, I go there for refreshment.

Campus life is really peaceful and comfortable. There is mostly greenery around the campus which I like the most. There are approximately 3000 students, so it is not as crowded. The most engaging thing about the campus life here are the clubs. There are many technical and cultural clubs. I am a part of the astronomy club. There help you gain both soft and hard skills. Also, the festivals are my favorite thing since they keep us entertained and help us feel stress free.
