Sinhgad College of Engineering B.Tech Review By Harshavardhan Kr

Hi, I'm currently a third-year student at SCOE, Pune. To talk about my college, it is located in Vadgaon. It is easily accessible by roadways, rail, and airways. The management is pretty decent. I wouldn't tell that it's the best considering that the teachers have also gone on strikes against the college for not paying them on time. Though this doesn't affect the students directly, it obviously does affect us indirectly (the quality of education went down for a few months).

The admission is done directly based on marks obtained in MHT CET. The seat allocation depends on the common counseling that occurs after the MHT CET. Besides qualifying the MHT CET, you should have obviously passed the 12th board exams. And please note that the physics and maths subjects are supposed to be compulsorily chosen in your 12th standard. JEE mains is also accepted in case you’ve not given the MHT CET.

I was keenly interested in computer science and was lucky enough to get the computer engineering branch in SCOE. 65% of the total seats are filled through MHT CET, while 15 percent of the seats are filled through management quota. You need to pass your 12th exam to be eligible for this course. The reason to join this course is mainly that I was interested in coding and programming. Another reason is that computer science is definitely future-proof and there are a lot of job opportunities as the tech world is booming.

Speaking about job opportunities, as we all generally know, computer science is in a lot of demand only because of the guaranteed placements and amazing job opportunities! So I can assure you that if you get into Computer Engineering in SCOE, please do not hesitate to go for it as the average package for computer engineering is a little less than six LPA and if you work hard you may even end up getting a higher package. Talking about the expected difficulty of the course subjects, I always was interested in programming and stuff. But in the second year, I realized that there is theory too! Jokes apart, as far as I have heard from my friends, I feel computer engineering course is pretty easy and manageable as compared to other branches like electrical and mechanical engineering, etc.

I would say that the faculty is decent, not the best though. We have a few passionate teachers who teach amazing! But there are a few teachers who are only placement-oriented and can't even deliver a presentation properly. Some teachers have slides every single time which makes me strongly feel that they won't be able to teach without the help of slides. Overall, I'd rate the teaching staff as 6 out of 10. Actually, if you're lucky enough you might also end up getting an experienced faculty which is surely like a cherry on a cake! For computer engineering, our class strength is 120 and there are 26 faculties in total. The ratio of students to teachers is around 11:1 in SCOE which is pretty decent compared to the other colleges. As far as I've heard from my friends in the other branches, the teachers are pretty qualified but they don't teach that great.

The reason might be partly because of the above-mentioned reason that college management isn't very nice and delay the teachers' salaries sometimes. Talking about the academic qualifications of the teachers, the teachers are pretty qualified. I am saying this because my teachers have a Ph.D. in their particular subjects. So, I won't hesitate to say that the teachers here are pretty qualified. But talking about the teaching itself, I wouldn't tell that the teachers are highly passionate. Some are damn good but the others are pretty manageable according to me. Some of the teachers have experience of over 19 to 20 years in teaching though most of them have experience of around 9 to 10 years. One of my teachers (Computer engineering) also has industry experience of up to 9 years. Most of them do not have industry experience though which is kind of a negative point.

Speaking about placements at SCOE, it’s probably better than average Yes, it sounds a little harsh but that's the fact! Sinhgad institutes enroll thousands of students throughout Maharashtra. This is kind of a negative point as the Sinhgad institutes have a centralized placement system, that is, you won't be able to be differentiated from the other students from the other Sinhgad campuses. Hence you won't be able to flaunt that you're from SCOE Pune during the placement season. YEAH, it is a fact that there is a ton of competition here in Sinhgad. Don't lose hope because if you do well you'll easily grab a good package, especially if you've chosen computer engineering.

Around 80 - 90% of the students easily get placed in computer engineering. Most of the rest usually don't sit for placements and opt for masters or look after their family business.

Some top-notch companies that visit our campus are Oracle, Infosys, Mahindra, Accenture, etc. The highest placement this year was Rs. 18 lakhs (Computer engineering) offered by oracle. The lowest package was Rs. 1.8 LPA. The average package in SCOE Pune (including all the branches) is around Rs. 4 LPA. For computer engineering, the average package jumps to about Rs. 6 LPA!

As for the hostel, there is no particular hostel for SCOE College. The students who use the hostel of the college and are from different engineering colleges of the same institute are required to dwell together. There are about ten hostels for boys and about eight hostels for girls, of course, girls’ and boys’ hostels are separate. Excluding the mess charges, it is worth the expense. Four people can stay together in one hostel room, and the rooms are big enough to accommodate them. Talking about the food in the college mess, it can get a little boring, eating same stuff again and again. The quality of food is just manageable in the long run. There are many canteens on the campus, which provide good meals.

The hostel fees can range from about 60,000 INR per year to 80,000 INR per year, including mess charges. The electricity and water supply are well enough. There are water coolers and aqua guards on every floor, so there should be no problem with drinking water in the hostel. There is an NRI hostel too, with better and additional facilities, like a TV and washing machine. For girls especially, the SCOE hostels are very safe and secure. Girls hostel is slightly better with respect to cleanliness, food, and distance from the college. Boys have almost no restrictions and girls have a lot of restrictions here. Hostel life is something that you should never skip! But it all depends on the peer group that you are with. Enjoy the hostel as much as you can.

The campus is very beautiful, with a total developed area of about 41,000 square feet. With good infrastructure availability and lush green all around, it is one of the best in Pune. There are hostels, canteens, cafeterias, a library, a gym, and well-maintained laboratories. There are spacious classrooms and labs, and cleanliness is maintained very properly. The library has lots of books and can accommodate about three thousand five hundred people at a time. The gym is nice, but some of the machines are in a pretty bad condition. The hostels are decent, and the power supply and water supply are pretty unproblematic. But, the Wi-Fi provided by the hostel is slightly bad. There are canteens with good food, and the hostel mess is okay. There is a seminar hall which can accommodate a hundred students. Parking provisions are spacious with separate areas for two-wheelers and four-wheelers.

There are many parks and shopping complexes around the college campus. Inside the campus too, there is a shopping complex for basic items and stationery. Sports center management is also very good. The campus provides a good enough playground, and you can use the playground facilities after college. The Health center and campus clinic are provided with all-round healthcare and routine check-ups. Medical and dental hospitals are also a provision. Overall, healthcare is good for quality healthcare staff. In a nutshell, the campus and infrastructure are well established and students can have lots of fun here!

The campus life in SCOE Pune is pretty good. The campus of SCOE is the biggest in Pune. So, the campus is quite spacious and green and provides a calm environment for us. And also in January of every year, as mentioned, SCOE conducts the biggest fest in Pune called the Sinhgad Karandak. Karandak is a huge fest that helps young talents bloom. Honestly both the years of Karandak for me were so much fun. The campus is one of the most beautiful places that one can dream to be a part of. You'll get what I'm feeling when you see the campus with your own eyes.

And also, before I forget we also have the hottest cultural fest in the town called "Neon" which one should never miss! We also have a fest called "Techtonic" which focuses solely on technology and innovation. Hence SCOE gets a perfect balance between academics and co-curricular activities for the students, hence polishing the overall development. There are also various clubs like the Dhruv club, English club and seco and much more. Also, people from all over India and some from different parts of the world come to SCOE, so you can expect a lot of exposure and growth in your personality. Overall, I'd rate the campus life in SCOE an 8 out of 10 :)
