Mithila Minority Dental College and Hospital BDS Review By Ghazala Usmani

Mithila Minority Dental College and Hospital was established in the year 1989 in Darbhanga. It’s the second oldest college in the state of Bihar. It is affiliated to Lalit Narayan Mithila University (LNMU), Darbhanga. It is a Post graduate institute. It offers courses in BDS and MDS. The duration of the course is 5 years for BDS and 3 years for MDS.

The admission is based on the rank obtained in NEET for BDS and NEET MDS for MDS. Candidates must have obtained 50% marks in intermediate (10+2) Science. The college is administered by the Managing Director.

I joined the college in the year 2013 & graduated in 2018. I appeared for NEET Entrance exam in the year 2013. You need to have Physics, Chemistry and Biology in (10+2) Intermediate to be eligible for this course. The candidates must be NEET qualified. The admission to the BDS course will be made through Centralised counseling of BCECE Board, IAS Bhavan, Patna. The college conducts 3 unit tests & 1 final exam every year. You must qualify the internal unit tests to be eligible for the final exam. If you fail to pass the unit tests, they're going to fine you. The annual tuition fees for BDS is Rs.3,00,000 (it may vary).

The college also offers a degree in Masters of dental surgeon (MDS). The eligibility criteria for admission in MDS course is to qualify NEET MDS Entrance exam which is held every year in the month of December. The admission will be made through Centralised counseling. You must have 75% attendance failing which they'll put some fine on you and until you pay those fines you won't be able to appear for the final university exams.

There are a total of 8 departments in Dentistry. Each department has at least 2 tutors, 2 Senior lecturers, 1 Reader & 1 HOD. The faculties are highly qualified and are extremely competent in their respective departments. The lecturers are very helpful .They aren’t egoistic. They are very concerned about the students performance in academics. Yes, of course! There are some exceptions. Despite being located in Bihar you will get to learn from doctors from the various states of India For example - Tamil Nadu, Mumbai, Rajasthan, Assam etc.

During the departmental postings, the faculties of the concerned departments help the students a lot. You also need to present a seminar in each departmental posting. This practice helps you a lot in boosting your confidence & helps you fight your stage fright. The college is very strict about its rules and regulations. In short, you'll have both good and bad experiences.

We have 1 year of unpaid rotary internship which trains us to be an actual doctor. They'll tell you that it's paid, but trust me guys they don't even pay you a penny. Even though our departmental postings begin in the 3rd year itself but we get to work on patient in Internship only. This college will offer you a lot of experience as its OPD is huge. By huge, I mean REALLY HUGE. Hence, you are going to perform a lot of cases which is going to be very helpful when you open your own clinic.

Since, there isn’t any restriction on Undergraduates to not perform a particular type of case, you will be able treat a wide variety of patients. After completion of your BDS or MDS course, you can join the college as a tutor or Senior Lecturer respectively. You can also work in the Government sector or apply for work in foreign countries. But, if you ask my opinion then please don't join college, do as many cases as possible in internship and open your own clinic.

There are separate well- furnished hostels for both boys & girls. Hostel fee is Rs.1,00,000 to 1,30,000 /annum including mess. The food provided in college canteen is of good quality. We have a different range of foods served every day. They serve vegetarian as well as non-vegetarian dishes. There are water coolers installed on every floor of hostel. You can also do your laundry as the college provides you with a common washing machine.

The rooms are double or single seated and they are spacious. They will also provide you with personal table and chair. The rooms are allotted by the management & it’s not easy to change your room. They can ask you to change rooms whenever they want, but that doesn't happen often. It happened with me when I was in final year.

MMDCH doesn't have an impressive infrastructure but its ok we're not here for the buildings. There are 3 tall buildings and a large sports ground. There are a total of 4 lecture theaters. The college also consists of a library, digital library, college canteen and a seminar room. There are various laboratories for different subjects.

Separate gym and entertainment room is available in both hostels. The college has a private van to drop & pick up the students (girls) from the market on the outing days. Every year, Josh fest is organized by the college which comprises of many indoor & outdoor game competitions such as badminton, chess, cricket, volleyball etc. To be honest I used to love the fest, as it provides you some relief from your studies. There is also a cafeteria present in the college campus.

Campus life is not very happening in MMDCH. There is no Wi-Fi connection. Outings are also only 1 per week and that only for 2-3 hrs maximum. The campus is safe as no one can get in or out without permission. The college is under the direct administration of managing director.

The college holds a grand celebration on Christmas and New year’s eve every year. There are many other celebrations held by the college such as Diwali, Saraswati Puja etc. Rangoli competitions are organized on Diwali. There are various other competitions which are being held by the college such as Scientific programs, art competitions etc.
