MICA - The School of Ideas PGDM Review By Souvik Chakraborty

At MICA, I loved to learn and by the end of it I was helpless but to love the institute like nothing else. The specialization courses that MICA offers are offered by no other B Schools in India and that is why students from top metros come and study at this college. I wanted to do specialization in Market Research and I don’t think any other institute can provide a better opportunity to learn other than MICA. Institute also makes sure that they make you ready for the job profile that we need as a student. The industry experts who used to come and have a word with us is something that is impossible to find. In terms of infrastructure the college has almost everything that one can ask for such as nice labs, great library and a beautiful sports field. From my experience I can say that I never had a single dull moment at the campus.

It was MICA that ensured that we learn to grow and that is how the education system at MICA is. It has added many more weapons to my skill set and the same way for all the students. The people who enter the institute are already graduate and you will find students from the best of colleges who come and study here. The course offered at MICA has supported my career and of many for that matter. Advertisement industry is at its boom and I did the right thing to enter here for doing a specialization course as no other instate could have groomed me the way MICA has.

The faculty is top-notch and someone who possess a vast knowledge and experience. Loved the way they used to teach us and gave us the liberty of exploring the ideas that we have. The second year which was mostly a practical season in which the faculty don’t have a major role to play, there also our faculty members used to come and tell us that you can ask them if their help needed. I don’t think I could have asked for more. MICA is a culture where faculty and students live with each other like we help and support our colleagues at work. It was our faculty that infused this system in us which as an Alumni of MICA will always be ingrained within me.

During the final semester we were sent for summer internship and I was lucky to be a part of DDB Mudra group. Those 2 months with them were so fruitful and it was there that I learned that we will only be wasting our creativity if we chose a job at some banks or other financial institutions. There were a lot of companies from the IT sectors and financial sectors that attended the campus. From IT sectors companies like HP, IBM, and Dell from the IT sectors took a large chunk of students. I initially hesitated to join a bank who offered me a job with them. The institute placement rate is well in 90s as just few students couldn’t get placements. I read the placement packages mentioned in the college site, it’s little exaggerated as the average package was some Rs. 5-6 lakhs while a few lucky one who got placed with Google or IBM did managed to get a placement valued at 4 times than us.

The hostels are in the college campus and the college and hostel are just 200m from each other. There are wings and boys hostel has 3 wings out of which 1 is reserved for 2nd year students because we were provided singular rooms during the final year. The girl’s hostel is at the opposite end and the building and rooms of both the hostels are identical. The fees was mighty high as one can find accommodation at half a price in Ahmedabad. The hostel also has a mess facility and only the vegetarian food was served and being a Bengali I had to say away from fish for month’s altogether because stepping out for food was hardly done by students of MICA.

In terms of infrastructure the college has everything for students. The college campus is far from the hustle & bustle of the city and therefore the pollution level is comparatively less. The campus has enough greenery and a tinge of freshness at the campus. The hygiene and cleanliness standards are something that no other Indian Universities can ever have. All the people associated with the canteen were seen wearing hats all the time and the food that was served made our evenings. The library of MICA has books of almost all genres but never got the time to issue autobiographies which I love reading. The college also has a cricket ground and it was occupied on holidays as the faculty and students were all on the field. Mica’s infrastructure justifies the huge fees that they charge.

MICANS is how we were referred and it was great being pedagogy of this illustrious institute. If I compare my career standings with what I learned at MICA, I would always thank MICA as they groomed me to have all the demographics required to be successful. The campus life can be subjective as the college as the college students divided themselves in groups from where they belong. Thankfully, a lot of people from Kolkata were there in my batch otherwise it would have been difficult to survive.
