K J Somaiya School of Engineering M.Tech Review By Rishi Chandak

The college will give you a lot of opportunity along with studies. KJSCE is not just about serious learning but will help you develop a personality that will make you confident. Placements will be done in your dream companies and the packages that you will have will also be a dream package. The fees are much higher and that fee is what used in building the infrastructure that the institute has. In my 2 years’ experience I have learned a lot from the college. The facilities that the college provided along with M.Tech there were disciplinary classes, and adding extra courses was up to us. So along with studies if you also want to have a fun-filled life then KJ is the one for you.

Academic is important as per the college norms but I know people who didn’t attended more than 10 lectures in a SEM and still did well as they had the best placements and also passed the exams with flying colors. I will have one complaint with the college that even after paying a huge amount as fees there are no air-conditions in the class rooms or the labs. Even government colleges have air-conditions these days but not KJ. I was also highly impressed with the number of assignments we were given as it were hardly 1-2 a week. Independent research was given more focus and the facilities were in abundance to do that.

For sure good, as all of them were qualified and PhD holders. They showed interest in the ones who were capable and approached them. They themselves adopted the smart study method and asked us to follow that. The attendance was not compulsory but they always advised students to be engaged with whatever they want to pursue. KJSCE had all the facilities and the faculty were always after us to use the college for all its good reasons. The faculty were cool and had just one message for the students that keep your mojo but also balance your studies at the same time.

The placement to your dream company is possible with KJSCE. The internship and the workshops arrange in the college were enough to show the mettle to the visiting companies. A package of Rs. 8-10 LPA beckons if you can impress the interviewers. They would dare to offer a package lower that that as KJ has a rapport and statistically are the best when it comes to placements in reference to engineering colleges. The IT companies were the ones who have interest in engineers and since my subject was IT, I was more than happy to be a part of a global IT giant Accenture that recruited 40+ students from our batch. The average package was 8-10LPA and the placement record was 80% and above.

KJ has both men and women’s hostel on the campus. The boy’s hostel is named Sandipani and Girls hostel is named Maitreyi. The boy’s hostel is 11 floor building and each floor had 18 rooms. The capacity of boys hostel is over 600. The girl’s hostel building is a 5 floor building and rooms were more or less the same. I haven’t seen the hostel from inside as outsiders had no business in entering the hostel. I had a lot of friends who were staying in the hostel and they shared all the information about the hostel. The hostel was common as UG and PG students both stayed in the same hostel. The food that was provided at the hostel was pure vegetarian and Jain options were also available.

The classrooms were no special as they were like old-school. The auditorium of the college is world class. The computer lab and laboratories are equipped with all the latest equipments. The library was stocked and had a separate reading area. Again there was no AC and was therefore mostly empty. Now comes the best part of the infra and that is the sporting facilities. An oval shaped cricket ground that also has a stadium like feel. The athletic ground meets all the international standard and was used by none other than Farhan Akhtar for the shooting of Bhaag Milkha Bhaag. The badminton court was used by Parineeti Chopra during the practice for her role of Saina. Volleyball, Tennis, Table Tennis, KJ campus has all the sporting facilities. Now you know the reason why classes are bunked.

A huge cheer to the previous Alumni of KJ. They have taken the name of the college to the world map. The formula student racing team called Orion Racing India from KJ is the first official formula team made by college students. The Marine Robotics Team was from KJ who invented underwater vehicle for multi-tasking was appreciated by none other than Honorable PM Shri Narendra Modiji in Mann Ki Baat. These are just a few examples as there are many such clubs at the campus who are given a free hand not just in research but in budget as well. If anyone has any ideas there is a cell formed especially for them. One just has to approach them and explain the idea and get the fund. Hence proven that KJ is the coolest campus.
