R.V. College of Engineering M.Tech Review By Ranjeet Shetty

Entrance test is mandatory for getting enrolled in RV College of Engineering. The college is indeed one of the best colleges in Karnataka. RV is the first choice college not just for PG but for under-graduate programs as well. After missing out during graduate program I gave my best for the PG and glad I finally made it. One thing different that I found here is that most of the students were boring and shy but were competitive. The clubs in the colleges were active and car racing club was among the most active one. Perhaps the only club that consisted of the students who were open and the racing club is called Ashwa that has represented the college at not just domestic level but at international level as well in many racing competitions. RVCE is not just another private engineering college but one of the best private colleges that you will find. The campus is huge and is located on the Mangalore highway and hence it was easier for me to catch bus for home. The college is one of the best and I will always boast it as RVCE was the source that has given me endless happiness and a career that has made me work at one of the top start-ups in India.

The college is old but was one of the first to adopt all the modern techniques and then the rest followed the suit. Getting here is one tough ask and surviving is another. M.Tech is tough and at R. V. is even tougher as I was never used to long assignments and working tirelessly to get the submissions done in time. Strictness for M. Tech is not so high but other than studies we had no choice as well. The clubs of the college are mostly related to education and still don’t have much takers. The enthusiasts already book themselves for the racing and debate clubs and studying and doing extra studies was the way I completed my PG at RVCE.

The faculty was satisfactory if not up to the mark. At least I never cursed them here because all one has to do is get in their good books and internal marks were then just be a formality. They are cold when it comes for help beyond the classrooms. This was one of the prime reasons that student-teacher interaction was not that high. Paying attention in the class and answering their questions correctly when asked was the best way one could impress them.

An entire block is dedicated for training and placement. RV College of Engineering Placement block was always busy and after the 2nd semester, M. Tech students made it their den as getting the best summer internship was on everyone’s radar. The final placements were curbed for those who couldn’t impress the internship companies and it’s not that world was over for them. Perhaps we got even better opportunities as Bangalore start-up industry was on high during our time and most of us may not have been a part of old pedigree but working in a start-up has its own benefits. RVCE MTech Placement average package that we got was some 10 Lakhs and it was more than satisfactory. Out of all the classmates that I am in touch with are working at the companies that have grown from start-ups to an established firms now.

Sir M. Visweswaraya block was reserved for boys doing PG and likewise DJ Hostel was reserved for girls doing PG. Another girl’s hostel building is outside the campus. The hostel block was an apartment style building and there was one large room with balcony. The rooms were tidy and spacious and had access to all the sporting facilities of the campus even after college hours. The Cauvery Hostel block was the common block of all boys hostel blocks for mess. The mess was huge and at a time some 200 students can have their food inside the mess. Again the variety in food was concern and also the hostel was pure vegetarian. Underneath RVCE Hostel block there was an ample parking space as most of the students had their own vehicles.

RVCE Campus is spread across 50 acres and though it is little old as I joined the college during its 50th year. The college now is 55 years old but most of the buildings are newly constructed. The gardens and all are well-maintained. The labs were even bigger and more equipped than those are of IITs. The sporting facilities both indoors and outdoors were great. Two huge sports ground one for football as it had goal posts and one that had cricket pitch at the center. In the indoor sports center there were 2 badminton courts, 5 table tennis tables, and a newly built gymnasium. The AV hall was huge and so was the library. Just wish that instead of having one huge library they could have had 2 libraries because the library is at the opposite end of boys hostel buildings and it was a 10 minutes’ walk from hostel to library.

One of the greatest student theatre clubs is of RV College. The theatre club named CARV has given many Kannada stars and is closely followed by eminent film-makers of Kannada film industry. If you have the skills this club might land you to direct auditions. 8th Mile, the college fest is organized by students as the college has given free hand to the students. The student’s pool arranges the sponsor and the budget of the fest then was 40-50 Lakhs. The fest was one of the best that I have ever seen and I wish the college legacy continues with such events for generations.
