Dayananda Sagar College of Engineering B.Tech Review By Jackson James

I attended Dayanand Engineering College for my Bachelor’s degree Biotechnology. DSCE has a limit of sixty students per year for this course. You can get in this course by writing the CET. You have to have a minimum percentage of at least 45% in your 11th and 12th, and need to have taken physics and maths. If you want to get in by management quota, you need to have at least 50% marks, and chemistry subject is also required and of course a huge donation amount as well. Donations have become a new normal considering the number of students that are applying through management quota. However, I don’t think Dayananda Sagar College of Engineering is worth enough to pay and take a seat.

I always had two passions from when I was young: science and being an entrepreneur. So, my plan was to get some undergraduate degree in science, and then go on for a management course. I chose this college because of its reputed name. I was disappointed in the academics here. Considering that this college has a good name, I joined. However, the teachers rarely cared about us, and I ended up having to learn stuff just on my own and just for the sake of passing exams. I was disappointed as the college had nothing special to offer and academics which forms the core has not been taken care of 1 bit.

Most of the faculty in my department were freshers and not very helpful at all. They simply came into teaching after finishing their degrees, and could not help to answers our questions. Average years of teaching would probably be about 2-3 years for the majority of the teachers. Many of them come here, get a year or two of experience and move onto different colleges. Most of the faculty have their Master’s in the field they are teaching. However, you can check the college website and you will see faculty changing every 2 years.

Dayananda Sagar College of Engineering Placement cell does their job well. I didn’t go through the process as I knew I wanted to study more. However, my classmates did go through placement training and all. They have different trainings in like how to write a resume and mock interviews. The average salary per annum that my classmates received was about 4-5 lakhs. The highest was Rs. 12 lakhs per annum which one student got. Some of the companies that came for placements were Infosys, Cognizant, Microsoft. The college has a pretty nice placement rate, and places a lot of students a year. If placement is your only criteria then Dayanand has at least taken care of this department.

This college does have hostels, however they are not nice at all. There are only double sharing or triple sharing rooms. There is an NRI hostel for NRI students only. The fees were really high, and most of my friends opted to go for paying guest rooms or apartments after the first year. The hostel has the basic facilities like mess and a common room. They claim there is Wi-Fi, but most of the time it doesn’t work. This is especially hard because so much of the work we had required using the internet. I would suggest getting your own Wi-Fi spot like Jionet. There is no washing facility, so you either have to hand wash or you can give it out to a laundry facility. There is security at the boys’ and girls’ hostel, and basically you have to sign in and out when you leave and enter the hostel. The food is alright. I have heard that the NRI hostel provides a better variety of dishes, but the cost is also much higher when compared with the other hostels.

The infrastructure and facilities are one of the good things about this college. There is a library which is multi-floored, and you can go here for all your academic needs as well as novels to read in your spare time. I was an avid reader, so I enjoyed being able to have a place to choose so many books. There are also a lot of facilities if you are into sports. There is a football ground, volleyball court, and basketball court just to name some. There is also a centre for yoga, and there is a certified yoga instructor who comes at specified timings during the week. Coming to food, there are multiple food courts in the campus, so you can get breakfast, lunch, or dinner from these.

One of the best parts of my college experience was definitely the fests. Our fest is called Furore, and it featured a bunch of different events that could be attended by students of colleges from all over India. There were events like fashion show, dance, and singing. It is a two-day event, and at the end of it there is an epic DJ night every year.
