KIT's College of Engineering B.Tech Review By Ankush Chavan

KIT was previously affiliated with Shivaji University but is now an autonomous college. The college has as many as 9 engineering streams. I am E&TC engineering passed out from the 2017 batch. All my answers will be based on that and will give my opinion rather than generalizing things. The college boasts a nice infrastructure and nice teachers. The industry interaction is great as the alumni of the college came and guided us on placements. No other college in the region offers the kind of package that KIT offers. Being a pro now and having done my PG from a recognized institute I hope I will be called in the future to guide the students of KIT. The college has a hell lot of potential as it is not that political funded college but it’s the industries that fund this college and also take the students from this college. Kolhapur Institute of Technology was my 1st Alma Matter and I am grateful that I stayed in my hometown and became a part of this prestigious college that has a lot to offer.

I won’t pitch for my own branch but all the 9 branches of KIT have almost the same facilities and same academic structure. The sessions started in July and the semester ended in December. We used to have 2 weeks break for the next semester and 4 weeks break after the end of the year. The studies were the priority and the college did try to mimic the colleges of big cities by initiating many clubs and events at the college. We were not used to them and therefore the guest lectures were introduced and ted talks were also organized so that we understand the value of joining such clubs. The talent was unearthed at the KIT as students excelled not just in academics but in various other fields as well.

The number of faculty for our branch was 20 and some teachers continued to teach us different subjects right from the 1st semester to 8th. Also, the guest faculty were invited to take practical's and give us an industry interface. The poster boys of the college were given extra attention by the faculty and the students who joined the college for fun were ignored by them. The faculty were easily approachable and were just a conversation away. A deep insightful conversation helped us not just in our studies but in changing the perspective of being engineers as well.

Many dream companies like Morgan Stanley and Capegemini have a deep connection with KIT. They have their criteria set as we had to maintain an aggregate of 60% by the end of the 6th semester to sit for interviews with them. Other companies like Samsung and Veritas also had their criteria and this led to a little bit of downfall in the number of students getting placed. If you are serious the placement was not far in your dream companies and that too with an annual package of over 6-7 lakhs p.a. Honeywell was the core company for the E&TC branch that offered packages worth 5-6 lakhs. There was a tag given bulk companies as companies like TCS, Wipro, IBM, and Accenture took over 400 students a year from all the branches but offered the placements with a package of 3-4 lakhs.

KIT has residential facilities with 2 boys and 1 girl’s hostel. The number of rooms was not enough as many students had to arrange their accommodation outside the campus. The hostel building was lavish and the multistoried building had a lot of facilities. Common 6-7 bathrooms on each floor. Water cooler with RO purifier. The rector was strict is all I know as they had to stand in queue for attendance at sharp 9 pm. The food provided at the hostel was also good as I invited many of my hostel friends for dinner but they rather had the hostel food to boast for. The fee was also just 15k per semester that included food as well.

I don’t think I have the word limit to describe every facility at the campus and will mention the noteworthy things of the college. The campus was fully Wi-Fi and had security cameras installed in all the buildings. The library of such magnitude can’t be found in Kolhapur at least. The racks were so tall that we had to use a staircase to take some of the books. We were acquainted with the library reading hall after the 2nd semester. The college was spread across 25 acres and had a world-class gymkhana behind the boy’s hostel. The playground in front of the boy’s hostel always had an upper hand of the hostel students as they hardly allowed the non-hostellers to play in the ground. This was a subject of concern and many of us also wrote a letter to the management about the issue. The hostel students were warned but the issue surfaced time and again. Last but not the least as KIT’s students we had exposure to all the latest instruments in labs in terms of hardware and software.

The Uniform was compulsory from Monday to Friday but we were allowed to wear casuals on Saturdays. The college is located at NH4 and the college had a bus facility for the students. The clubs of the college were active and are still in the building phase. Once the city develops the students too will get accustomed to that. I was happy with the college and I hope I have answered all your questions regarding the college.
