KPB Hinduja College of Commerce B.Com Review By Lalit Sawant

I am a proud student of KPB Hinduja College of Commerce. The college has junior and senior college and the college strength is over 1500. There are 12 to 15 classrooms on each floor and it’s a 4 floor building. The senior college timings are from 7am to 11.30 am and junior college from 12 to 4 pm. The classes are maintained accordingly as the space is limited but the college is owned by Hinduja group who are known for making the best use of the resources. They have done the same with college and even though it’s a private college the fees is quite cheap. The crowd is mostly of South Mumbai as the cut-off is lesser than colleges like Jai Hind College, and Sydenham College for that matter. The cut-off for junior college during my batch was 77% and the junior college students get a direct entry to the senior college. After spending 5 years at Hinduja College my conclusion is that it is one of the best commerce colleges in Mumbai. Strictness wise all the colleges of Mumbai are same except Narsee Monjee College. It was a pleasure to be an Alumni of Hinduja as there were many learning opportunities at the college.

Nor the junior or the senior college was strict. A low attendance letter reached home almost every year but no action or warning was given for that. I went to the college daily as I had a lot of friends but attending lecture was definitely not my thing. There were 2 practical subjects in each year of B. Com and had few nerds at the college who helped me out with that. Academics may not that important at Hinduja but we had many other college activities we were always welcomed for suggestions.

M. Phil and PhD was the qualification of each one of them. In terms of experience they were teaching in Mumbai University for ages. Luckily the syllabus hasn’t changed for a while and their question banks and suggestions that they gave before the University exams were enough to pass with 1st class at the University level. The faculty never impelled us to take studies seriously but at least pass as graduation would be the least qualification required in times to come. Their advice was never wrong and they always guided us for a better future.

Hinduja Group has a lot of core companies and every 20-30 students were hired by them. Some other companies and banks visited the campus but out of 400 B.Com students only 70-80 had some sort of placements. The package was respectable as 3-4 LPA wasn’t bad for B. Com students but most of the jobs offered were of sales officer. BMS students had some great placements but B.Com students mostly stayed away from the placements as we knew that we don’t stand a chance.

The college doesn't provide hostel facility. There are quite a few men’s hostels in Charni Road and they were the preferred options for the students of other cities. Paying guests and taking flats on rent were some other options as the college had no role in providing hostel facility to the students.

The college was located near Opera House and is one of the best locations in Mumbai. The Girgaon Chowparty was nearby the college and the Charni Road railway station wasn’t that far. The college building was huge as one building was there inside the campus. Inside the campus there was space for 50 cars and 300 two wheelers. The building was monumental and has all the latest facilities with digital classrooms and digital library being the most prominent. Then there was a nice stage in the campus where small functions were celebrated. The college library was enormous and had over 50,000 books including academic and non-academic books. The left side of the ground floor was the admin department and the staff-rooms and teachers area was there. The students had to take a prior permission before entering the teachers’ lounge. There was a seminar hall inside the building which hosted guest lectures and conferences. The students were permitted to use the gym facilities after the lecture hours. There was a small canteen inside the campus that served snacks and hot and cold beverages.

At Hinduja the life was as relaxing as anything. The lectures attendance was not compulsory and the events and all were also not compulsory. The college had certain students who participated all 3 years and rarely any new faces were seen. The clubs at the college did a tremendous job because there were drama clubs, sports clubs, and many social clubs. The candle march that you must have seen from 2013 to 2016 had many Hinduja students participating as they were always ready to march for protests. Many initiatives like clean and green Mumbai where all the sweepers were awarded medals for keeping Mumbai clean was covered by all the local media. Salman Khan was the guest of honour and he sponsored the medals as well. The college fest buddiez was cool as many new talents unfolded which even we weren’t aware of. Not so hyped or not so under the clouds was the life at Hinduja campus.
