JD Birla Institute M.Sc Review By Shruti Binani

J. D. Birla Institute is affiliated to Jadavpur University and accredited with the highest 'A' grade by NAAC, which has four different Science departments. The departments are Food Science and Nutrition Management, Human Development, Interior Designing, and Textile Science, Clothing and Fashion Studies. In addition, there is a Commerce department as well. It offers two courses. The B.Com course is available in the main campus at Minto Park, and the BBA course is available in the other campus at Moira Street. It has been three years that I completed my post graduation from the college. I have done B.Sc. Hons. and M.Sc. Hons. in Textile Science, Clothing and Fashion Studies from the Birla-owned institute. It was a full-time course from 9.30 am to 4 pm, and used up most of the day. My overall experience there was great. Being an organisation of repute, it has notable alumni with people doing very well in every field. Kirti Bhoutika, the Masterchef India Season 5 winner is a nutrition graduate from the college. It is definitely one of the most disciplined colleges in the city. It has a school like environment, with a lot of strictness for the students. The principal is a disciplinarian as well. She used to serve as a faculty member and took classes in the TCFS department in my time. She was definitely an excellent teacher. Another factor is the strict attendance that you require in this college. The discipline and the attendance requirement make it nothing less than school life. I was denied giving an exam in the college when I was five minutes late, although I did not even request for additional time. Some may see the discipline as a negative, but I have a good recommendation for the institute. However, I would not suggest JD Birla Institute for people who plan to pursue other professional courses for their career simultaneously with their graduation. The strict attendance makes it difficult to be at par with studying for the side courses, and also ensuring that we fulfill the attendance requirement.

The academics are surely one of the best factors in the college. The disciplined ambience was a positive point for motivating me to focus better on my studies and score more. Of course, it is upon the students to take it as an advantage or a disadvantage for themselves. The compulsory attendance also urges the students to be regular and attend all lectures. The rankers are all awarded in a grand felicitation ceremony.

With respect to the TCFS department, the faculty is again one of a kind. All the professors are well informed experts in their respective fields of knowledge, with a number of degrees in their credentials.

I do not have a very detailed idea about the rest of the departments. With regard to the TCFS department, the college does organise placements for its students. The placements are good, but not really worth it. During my time, one of the placement companies was Unicraft Textiles in Kolkata.

The college does not have a hostel, since most of the students are from the city itself. Some, who come from outside Kolkata, are easily able to look for options for accommodation in the locality, since the institute is situated in a very busy area of the city.

JD Birla College has a very good infrastructure. The main campus based at Minto Park has one building, complete with a canteen, an auditorium and laboratories for different departments. The laboratories are all air-conditioned, high-end and very neat, with a laboratory assistant available at all times in each of them. The canteen has a space extension, and a very large area just adjacent to it is left open, which is ideal for auditions, dance practices, and so on. The classrooms are all air-conditioned and digital friendly. They have projectors in all rooms. Even the faculty is technologically advanced. Every professor is aware of operating with the advanced facilities. The entire campus is also CCTV enabled.

As I mentioned before, JDBI Management campus life is no less than that in a school. It is a hectic schedule for all the classes. There is an immense amount of mental pressure for studies, with plenty of assignments for the students. Also, every occasion, small or big, is celebrated with a lot of grandeur and oneness. The college organises a cultural programme for every memorable day, complete with dance and music performances. The institute also conducts plenty of workshops, seminars and motivational sessions for its students. It definitely aces other colleges when it comes to extra-curricular activities, in order to help the students grow and contribute to their holistic development in each and every way.
