One of the most disciplined colleges of DU, Venkateswara College, also offers some great fun with some of the best crowds. The college is quite particular regarding the classes, and sometimes the peer pressure is built so that we study a little extra. Studies are given importance over other activities, but Venky College is still active all year round in extra curriculum activities. Every month there is some event, and the college societies are worth being a part of. I loved interacting with seniors, and if you get a chance to be a part of any college society, don’t hesitate. Definitely one of the best on the South campus. The crowd of Venky is decent as the sports quota in the college is a little higher than its peers. Apart from studies, the college is associated with social societies like Parivartan, and Enactus. Always try to make friends from other departments as they will be the ones who will help you sustain and make fun during college life. One piece of advice from my experience would be that don’t be bounded once you enter Venky. You will get to explore various facets of life here, so audition as much as you can and get active with college societies. I have experienced my best years of life at Venky.
In the first year, the attendance of 75% or more is compulsory. You can’t ignore them because there are repercussions to it. From 2nd year onwards, things started getting cool as you become seniors and know most teachers. Thus, you can get away even with a 50% or so attendance. Even if I avoided lectures, I came to college daily as it had a lot to offer other than academics. Venky college is quite in sports as they have always done well in football and cricket at the university level.
One has to be quite consistent in academics only then will you love the faculty. Inconsistent marks will be a trouble for you as they will have to attend classes and will not be allowed to spend more time with their attached societies. The admin department is quite tough to maneuver, especially if you don’t know the do’s and how’s of the department you are in. One more thing is that faculty look at the students up and down. There is no college dress code, but if you ever come to college in regular slippers, then faculty will take you for a merry ride.
The B.Sc department is one of the best departments of the college, but placements were undervalued. Just a few regulars that have been associated with the college came and interviewed the students who showed interest. Half of them appeared, and half of those were offered jobs worth 25-30k. In a city like Delhi, 30k after graduation means nothing, and thereby many students who had the job denied being a part of the organization that showed interest in them. I was one of those, and there’s nothing that college will do about it as they will only force you to take what you get. They just want their numbers to sustain but providing meaningless jobs was not ideal.
The college has both boys and girl’s hostels but are too small. DU has always attracted students from other states who score well. A hostel is always in demand, but it’s allotted on first cum first serve basis, and many students had to find a way beyond campus. I am not sure, but the university hostel too has some seats reserved for students of Venky college.
The college campus has 2 buildings, and Arts, Commerce, and Science students used to share the same building as the UG classes were held in the same building. Science department infrastructure is better than the other two. Many labs of Zoology and Botany departments were newly built. The library is huge, and one should make the best use of it as it has books of all disciplines. The college canteen is poor but who cares as Satya Market was nearby and that saved our day. There is a lawn and a vast playground which is rare in DU colleges. The college location is excellent because the DTC bus stop outside the college is pretty connected, and the Metro station was also within walking distance from the college.
The three-day cultural program called NEXUS was one of the best among DU colleges. The college administration passes whatever budget the student union asks for, which makes the event so successful. NEXUS sees a footfall of over 30k students as the program includes Sufi and rock bank performances. Various regional dances along with drama are showcased and are enjoyed by many from the bleachers. Sports are given a lot of importance here and always field their team for many sports during university sports week. Venky has done well in sports and has also built a modern-day cricket pitch and ground inside the campus.
Sri Venkateswara College is a great college of DU but not that great for Commerce. The college is one of the best colleges of South Campus. I can’t remember it all as it’s a long time coming for me at the Venky but I hope my views about the college help others to an extent that they can decide whether they should join it or not. There are numerous clubs and societies but it’s the art students that take the maximum footage. The commerce students are lying somewhere in between because nor do... Read Full Review
