Bangalore Institute of Technology M.Tech Review By Saif Zaidi

From Indore to Bangalore was because Bangalore Institute of Technology is one of those college that offers the specialization course, I wanted to pursue. The course is machine designing which is provided only by some rare universities in India. The admission for M.Tech in Machine Designing is through a tricky entrance which is followed by an interview. The seats are quite limited, and one has to be absolute best to crack both the part. Once you have done it, you can relax as life at the college was different for me but nothing much to bother. Outsiders will hardly feel outsiders here because every other student you meet here will be from some other state. I believe BIT has students from all states of India. The culture exchange and making friends with the ones who I never thought I would, was great fun. The college may be not that great, but the college's reputation is such that placements from BIT are more or less 100%. One complaint that I can lodge about the college is that autonomous colleges, in general, have quite a few holidays, but BIT Bangalore hardly had any.

Too many practicals and internals were also taken in part so one has to be prepared. If one has missed out on something important, he/she will find many people to assist him/her. This was quite rare but students here help each other out because the faculty have no business once the classes were done. Therefore, one has to be attentive because the teaching was complacent and if one pays attention, even such a tough course will look easy. Machine designing requires over 10 hours of classes daily, including practicals. I was prepared for such a life as this has made us ready to adapt to working environment as we have to spend 10-12 hours daily at the office.

The faculty of Bangalore Institute of Technology was not ordinary but average. They were highly educated and also took the classes seriously. However, if, by chance, you have slept during the classes or bunked them then you will have to do all of it on your own. One thing that I learned at BIT was keeping the friends close to the chest actually helps. Teachers will never repeat if they have given any information regarding the practicals or exams they will be taking. So, if you don't want to get surprised, make some friends who will keep you updated about the classes or else it can be huge trouble.

Placements of the college have made this college one of the most loved colleges by students from all across the country. Core companies are called upon, and even though Bangalore is an IT hub, you won’t find IT companies taking care of all the students irrespective of departments. Thus, if you have done engineering seriously and love being called an engineer, BIT is the best. Placements may be little less than what the CSE or IT engineers may take but getting placed in the companies for which we have drilled day in and day out will satisfy one for sure. It certainly has satisfied me as working in a government sector company BEL was only possible because of BIT.

It was shocking as the hostel were not inside the campus as the campus in a way didn't have that much space. Rather than a hostel, I decided to rent an apartment near the college because the boy's hostels are 2 kms away from the college and has 4-5 signals from college to hostel. If one is aware of the Bangalore traffic, even a distance of 2 kms takes almost 30 minutes. The college's location is great and many residential buildings are nearby. Students are given flats in these societies but only after laying many conditions. Hostel buildings are big, and nearly 400 students of the college stay in the college hostel. The girl's hostel was even further, and I don't know whether it was the lack of planning or what because having hostels outside campus is a general trend in Bangalore.

The college is not so big, but the college has almost everything apart from a proper playground. The academic building was huge, as UG classes were on the 2nd and 3rd floor while PG classes were conducted on 4th floor and 5th floor. The 6-floor building had the admin department on the first floor, and there are 2 buildings in all at the campus. The machinery department lab was like a railway yard but hardly had any dust which is quite common in Bangalore. This shows that the college was looked after well. The auditorium was like a Wembley stage as it was majestic, and not just students but many Kannada film stars have performed at BIT's auditorium. The college canteen was a complete no-no for me as it was a full South Indian menu, and having Idli, Uttapam, and Dosas at any point in time was certainly not my thing.

Not much events as my UG college had. There was no dress code but students had to wear formals as jeans was not allowed on weekdays. Even the girls can't wear skirts, and all as the college is quite strict about what students wear at the college. Even students were not allowed to come in slippers, and all this soon became a habit. Meeting people from a different culture was one of the biggest positives that I took from BIT. Placements were the main reason I came so far, and getting placed in one of the top companies has made my campus life worthwhile.
