Himachal Pradesh University is well known as HPU to every student. It is one of the famous universities in North India and I have been a part of this university. It is a huge campus and mostly every course is available there, and they prepare you for the IAS. The admission is followed by the entrance test in every course but they have 10% reservations for other states. This university is in Shimla and the weather is to die for throughout the year. I mainly loved to be here only because of the weather and the education system is average on the campus. Maximum students are Himachal Bonafide.
I joined the university for a B.Ed course and the basic eligibility is 50% in Bachelors and reserved castes get relaxation of 5%. I wanted to pursue education course for becoming a qualified teacher. I have got the course as per my expectations, but the structure for B. Ed is not good. If you seriously wish to do B. Ed then goes to the private affiliated colleges of this University. They have a strong structure of the education system. Students on the main campus mainly take admission for the library. This course is helpful in getting a job anywhere because this university is well recognized all over India.
The number of faculty is very low in the Education department. There are hardly 4 professors in the university and they do not recruit teachers. The teachers are also not available half the time and they ask their scholar students to teach the students. Those teachers are well qualified and have teaching experience and can teach the best, but they do not make any effort because they are aware that even students do not take the course seriously and are here only for the library cards. Hardly 2-3 classes were organized during the whole semester and the classes used to begin at morning 10 am and got over by 2 pm. No professor ever took the classes regularly.
If you expect to get hired from the campus itself, you need to get admission in any good course in the same university like the MBA or other professional course. Education courses do not give any such importance in this university. They provided us the training of 4 months in schools that was a memorable experience for me. There is not even a single student who got the placement from the campus but yes after trying by themselves, a few of the students from my batch are working with schools.
There are in total 10 hostels for the girls and 4 hostels for the boys. Hostel days are unforgettable for every person. Those are the best days of my life. The hostel room and occupancy depend upon the hostel allotted to you. A few of them have double, triple, and quadruple occupancy and a few have single occupancy also. The students from every course live together in hostels. The total per year fee of the hostel is Rs. 4000 and 3000 is the security fee that is refundable after completing the course. The food quality is different in every hostel. The mess is a cooperate mess and students manage it. They manage the expense every month and prepare mess bills for boarders. They also have the responsibility of ordering the cooks for the food to be cooked in all three meals. Security is fine in every hostel. You just need to fill the leaving register entry and can leave anytime at the hostel. Security guards are sitting for the night duty only and daytime there is security on the main gate.
It is a huge university situated in the Summer Hill of Shimla. It is spread in acres and it has different small parts located a few kilometers also. The biggest part of the campus is the library and the most lavish part is the auditorium. The classrooms of my department were average but they never got them cleaned after the winter vacation. Classrooms are big enough to fit 100 students. Spacious and nice classes. There is a playground located a few kilometers from the university because it is a hilly area and the playground needs to be on a plain so it is located little far. There is a cafeteria that is run by an old lady and her family that cooks amazing food at very cheap prices. There is also a government dispensary near the MBA department that is free for every person. For minor dressing and other small health issues, students used to visit there.
I had a great experience there because I am a mountain person, but people from Delhi feel very cold there and leave the university most of the time. I had an amazing journey there. Good weather, peaceful place, good friends and walk able pollution-free roads. There are many activities run by the political parties there and one needs to be active to learn about them and participate. On every occasion, there is some celebration organized. No fests are organized by University but every cultural function happens and anyone can participate in them. Holi celebration is unforgettable in University. Everyone gets together and dance and it's like some fest going on. There is one issue that no women can eat outside because of the hungry monkeys of Shimla. They have attacked many girls in the hostel also. Otherwise, people are very polite in Shimla and helpful also. If you are a mountain person then you will love to be a part of this university.
