B.N.M. Institute of Technology B.Tech Review By Vikas Kumar

BNM Institute of Technology (BNMIT), Bangalore was established two decades ago in 2001 with the support of BNM Charities. The institute is fairly new in comparison to many other in the city. Education was the main focus of the institute and therefore they have tried their best to make sure they provide students the best set of facilities and guidance. They have been successful in doing so but in the process have become too strict. There’s no get out of jail from the institute once you have enrolled here. I have spent four years there and had my shares of up and down. Yes, they have made some quality engineers who are working at top positions in some of the prestigious organizations. What many don’t know is the number of dropouts that this institute has in last few years. In my batch over 10% of the students dropped out because they were not happy and not willing to work the way institute wanted.

VTU is known for having an advanced course that is industry based. I have no doubts in saying that they did well both in terms of completing the syllabus on time and making sure students have all their doubts cleared before the exams. Attendance was strict and therefore mass bunking and all was not possible at BNM IT. Assignments were given in numbers and practicals add up to 20% so by hook or crook we had to submit them in time. Some may call the education system at the institute poor but I would just call it too strict.

All of them had a huge amount of experience and the number of faculty for each subject were largely high. If one is on leave, we will be assigned proxy professors who were equally good. The top management would have students view about the faculty and therefore nothing wrong could have gone. Students were at the forefront always and faculties therefore always took a backseat. Faculties were helpful in all ways as they would treat us the best and make sure we are well prepared. They used to make us push and the ones who were able were given extra attention to make sure that BNM IT has the top ranked students. Faculties have played a pivotal role in making sure that students of BNM IT become one of the best professional engineers.

Placements were great or should I say the best. As an engineer having job is tough and making sure that the placement percentage remains over 70% was great. All top tech companies were invited and they were pretty with the way students conducted. Placement cell would work hard for all those who missed out and students like me who opted not to appear for interview were prepared for further studies. Quite supportive placement cell that made sure students get the top jobs. Kudos to this section as one can have complaints about the section below this but definitely not the placements.

Being a local guy, I haven’t seen hostel premises from inside. From what I learned, the hostels were good and food provided was also good. Girls’ hostel was next to PG building and for them it was just a 100m walk. The boys’ hostel was also not far from the premises and the institute has arranged buses for them to come to the college. The buses would operate timely and therefore if you miss it, you have to pick an auto or private bus to come to the college. Even though the college had mostly the locals, the college made sure that they have enough capacity to accommodate outsiders.

Infrastructure was good but parking area needs a lot of attention. Either the college should make sure that they have a parking area assigned. It was hard to take my bike off the guards because it was so congested. Among buildings they were neat and were cleaned daily. Even the garden was well maintained and water purifiers were working alright. The washrooms were there on each floor and canteen too served hygienic food. Canteen was the epicenter as it was close to block B in which CSE classes took place. Labs were updated every year and the IT centre or the computer lab had some PCs which were not in working state. Library too was small as the reading area could only accommodate 80-100 students.

Not many cultural events but educational events were galore. We can showcase our projects almost every month as many industry experts were called upon to judge our work. We were made to interact with industry experts right from our orientation program to farewell party. Farewell party was the one that made me forget all the miseries that I had because at the end of the day students had placements or their future plans ready. BNM IT on the whole was an average college but has the potential to be one of the best.
