GD Goenka University B.Tech Review By Pinkesh Tyagi

Coming from a family where I have grown up seeing engineers, it was inevitable for me to choose a course but engineering. I joined the University in the year in which it started its operations. They did have schools and all in the region, so it was a no brainer for me to study at GDGU. Since ours was the first batch, things were pretty easy as the management was still figuring out too many things. Since we were the first ones, the admissions were as smooth as applying butter on bread. I was asked to fill out a form and then was called for a test along with a few others like me. The test was for 30 minutes, and 30 minutes later, we were informed that we had been selected. I knew something fishy as the University had a quota of many seats, but not even half of them were filled. Flaws are everywhere, but the activities and fun that I had there were unmatched.

Academic wise, things were quite easy. Initially, we were told that attendance is strict and all. Some students started bunking the classes on purpose, and no actions were taken. Thus, all the students started doing the same as everyone loves to ride with the wind. The question papers were set so easy that passing was like a walk in the park. However, there were advantages of that as well because we could spend time on the projects we liked. So, it was more like developing skills independently than taking advantage of the university faculty or facilities.

The faculty was just like the students as they were tough on us for the first two semesters. Once the students started bunking, they too were happy having their chit chat sessions in the afternoon. It wasn’t entirely their fault as half the class was missing, and that’s why even they lost interest. Nor did they had any malice against students neither did the students had any malice towards them. It’s just that the combination didn’t go right; otherwise, things might have been different.

There was an industrial tour organized to Canada. However, we had to pay a lot of money to go on that tour. Many students like me had to tell our parents that this tour would help us get placed, and that is why more than half the class went on that tour. We did visit some industries but industries of bigger magnitude than those are in Gurugram so that tour was in a way waste. After all this drama and all, a placement session was held at the campus. Since the Goenka’s are not into IT business, they could help the IT students much as hardly any students got placed. I don’t know the current scenario, but I wish industries could start making their way to GDGU.

There were boys and girls hostels inside the campus, but hardly any students were staying at the hostel during our time. After we entered the third year, many outsiders made their way into the hostel. The buildings were good, and I saw all the rooms from the dormitories to the sharing rooms. All of them were top class, and the hostel also had common rooms that had fridge and TV. There was also a common study room in the hostel building. The hostel was nice for outsiders as rather than staying outside the campus, it is always better to stay close to the campus. No better way than staying in the university hostels as they were inside the campus.

Most of the facilities were new as the University was formed in 2013, the year in which we joined, so from all the colleges that I saw, GDGU definitely had the edge over them in terms of infrastructure. The campus has school and college blocks on the same campus. The engineering block was the B block in which we studied. Centralized air-conditioning is available in the buildings at the campus, be it school buildings, college buildings, or the library building. Many students used to come to college in their cars, so the car park area was sufficient for parking nearly 500 cars. The famous food joint at the campus was Chai Garam, and there are few other cafeterias other than that at the campus. Infrastructure wise, GDGU is probably the best in Gurugram.

The orientation program was hot and cold, but other functions and events were fire. The annual function at the campus is followed by many as the college has students who aspire to be models. Celebrities are invited to each annual function and none other than Rockstar Baadshah was invited when we were in the third year of engineering. Even though I spent four years, I still felt, I was good for a few more years because the fun at the campus was unlimited.
