SJES College of Management Studies MBA Review By Dhiraj Patel

It was in my destiny to be a part of the average college, and therefore I could reach SJES College of Management Studies. The institute accepts any scores if you have appeared for any competitive exams. The general MBA of the college teaches all the subjects from HR to Marketing. The fees are petty compared to other top colleges, and that's purely because SJES is an average institute. I came to know about this college through a friend; otherwise, even after spending four years in Bangalore, I had never heard of this college as they hardly do any marketing. The in-take of the batch is 240, and around 200 students made it as during my batch, it was not running at full capacity. This instead worked to our advantage as most students had campus placements, and also, the student to faculty ratio became more favorable for students. The management is one of the kindest as even though you don't know anyone from non-teaching staff, if they pass you, they will put on a smile on their face.

Academic wise, MBA is tough as engineers are good in maths but calculating the demand-supply and solving the larger problems are learned through management. The course was so vast that it was mostly catch up. Some good case studies were solved in the class, and discussion on those made the understanding easy. A summer internship helped the cause as learning directly through working with an organization is much more fruitful than learning in class. Various workshops and team-building tasks were arranged at the campus every week. There was always a motivation level as the team winning used to get rewards. So, studying was more of fun at SJES.

The faculty was quite experienced, and their corporate background brought many new things to the table. Learning graphs or making presentations are not enough. Weathering the storm is important in management studies, and that is what they taught us. One can just go bang bang with books as books were of not much help. Our faculties gave the discussions in the classrooms and practical more importance. Their methods were no less than genius.

Placements were again in average organizations as Airlines companies showed a lot of interest not to the students doing MBA general but to the ones who were doing in Aviation and Logistic. I made a mistake choosing the wrong course because the placement rate for Aviation and Logistic management was closely 100% while that of general was 50%. Some IT companies and some established start-ups have been the college's loyal partners, and they gave us jobs that suited our profiles. Some companies desperately needed students with an engineering background, and that is where students like us had that advantage.

SJES Boys hostel was a three-floor building with 40 rooms in total. All the rooms were given on a twin sharing basis, and all the rooms had balconies in them. The rooms were spacious and were neat and clean. At the ground floor of the hostel, there was a common room with many recreational facilities and a TV and fridge. Likewise, there was also a girl's hostel inside the campus, and they too had the same set of facilities. The hostel fees too, was reasonable, if not petty. The dining hall of the hostel was great as it was air-conditioned, and everything was served fresh and hot. However, the menu again was beyond me as their staple food and mine are totally different.

Since the college had very few departments, there were just two buildings on the campus. The main building was so vast that if you had friends in another department, it will take a while to go and meet them. Just beneath the building, there's a basketball court and an indoor sporting facility room that also has a gymnasium attached to it. There's a medical unit available at the campus 24*7. The college is not that vast, so just alongside the college parking area is used for playing outdoor sports. Infrastructure wise, the college is average.

MBA students always have to be on their toes as if we are done with writing assignments, we have group projects to complete, and if that is done, we have to be ready for the case study that will be discussed the following day. The hostel recreation room was the only place where weather storms came to our rescue. The college hosts many events, including tree plantation and blood donation camps inside the campus. Freshers and farewell days are celebrated with a lot of enthusiasm.
