SJES College of Management Studies MBA Review By Aditya Mishra

The institute was established more than a decade back. I am positive only from the end. There are 2 kinds of MBA offered here one is an MBA in General and the other one is an MBA in Aviation and Logistics. The college also offers a regular UG course in that and that’s an area where the college has done well. The students who did UG from SJES are given first preference in admission to their Aviation Program. Thus, I was left with the option of joining MBA General. Placements for MBA General weren’t bad. But one drawback is that the college is on Madras Road so opting for a hostel becomes mandatory here. Some other cons are that internship opportunities were provided. The accommodation facilities were good but the food was beyond me.

As soon as college started, within a week, the timetable or the schedule of the first internals was announced. We were always thrown into situations that brought out nocturnal behavior in us. The normality I thought will be restored after the first internals. But no, the next exam date was announced. Before, we could realize we were at the end of our first semester. The same went in the second semester and things went so thick and fast. Within the blinking of an eye, we were done with our first year. We were asked to join some internship programs as college will provide us with a NOC for that. Finding it on my own was the most terrible thing as I didn’t have any connections and couldn’t get engaged in an internship. The students who did benefit and I started the final year on a back foot. Luckily college took us on an industrial tour. And provided all the exposure that an MBA student needed. That more or less covered up the things I missed.

Our college professors were the best source. To have as much information on things beyond the subjects. They paid attention to all our doubts and soon became our buddies. So, it was fun learning under our buddies. If professors behave like professors, sometimes it becomes tough to approach them. At SJES though, professors hold nothing back. But to support students in whichever way they can.

Placements are average but if you have done some good projects, attend all the seminars. And have good terms with the placement cell, you will have a job. Many start-ups are now established. Have shown good interest in students of our batch. Pay cheques were not as fat as one would expect. But at a fee of 2.5 lakhs, if one finds a job worth 4-5 LPA, there’s nothing that can beat that. So, ROI wise the college is as good as any top institute in the country. But the only condition is you have to get placed through campus. Some of my batch mates refused or couldn’t find on-campus jobs. Have failed to find a job that suits an MBA student profile off-campus. We were lucky that placements were done and dusted by January. Because if it crossed March, the placements would have been none due to the Corona situation.

Hostel rooms were amazing as they had a balcony and a garden right next to the boy's hostels. The capacity of the boy's hostel is quite less. I had to wait for 10 days at the hotel. My admission to the hostel was only subject to someone canceling their admissions. I agree that students from outstation enroll here. But the number of rooms that were there in 2019-2020, never remained empty. Food was terrible as I saw students admiring it. But for me, having Rasam Rice and Uttapam daily for dinner and breakfast was not cool.

There’s a single block but that itself is so huge. Our classes were held on the third floor and we had access to the computer lab at any point. The lab was right next to our classes. We could excuse the lectures by saying we are at the lab for some research papers. Even the classrooms were great if not a world-beater. Since it’s Bangalore, the garden and trees have to be in the equation. There were many trees and the management was still not satisfied. On every environment day, they used to make students plant a few more trees. The campus was small in size but was quite beautiful.

In the evening, we used to play basketball as that was rather the only option for us to unwind. The other option was to grab a cup of coffee and sit on our hostel balconies. And have intellectual talks with our fellow batch mates. I came from a college where there were events organized every other day. At SJES, very few events and that too average from what I have seen during my UG life. All in all, I was satisfied with the campus life as it gave me my space.
